Youth One - The Father of Graffiti in Portugal

In my previous post, Youth One strikes in Porto, I've shown you a fantastic Graffiti work. Now, I'll show you two more works from the same artist and I'll give you extra information about him.

His name is Adalberto Brito and he was born in Angola. Known as one of the major boosters of the Graffiti scene in Portugal, as part of the Hip-Hop culture, he has profoundly inspired Graffiti artists during the 90's.

He calls himself Youth One because he believes "he should die old with a young spirit."

Youth One...

• Went to the Faculdade de Belas Artes (Faculty of Fine Arts) in Lisbon;
• Created logos for several brands;
• Was the mentor and founder of the Rap Band, Mundo Complexo;
• Illustrated the cover of the CD from the band Primitive Reason;
• Presented exhibits of his works in Portugal, Dili - Timor Leste, Darwing - Australia and Marseille - France;
• Was nominated in 2001, by the book Tráfego - Porto Capital Europeia da Cultura (Traffic - Porto European Capital of Culture), as one of the 100 characters with more talent on the category of Arts in Portugal;
• In 2011, was one of the founders of the Dedicated Store Porto, the first shop in the city of Porto totally dedicated to the Urban Arts.

The second piece is a couple of meters away, at the entrance of a small and almost deserted Shopping Centre:

Youth One has 30 years of experience as Graffiti artist and is background goes back to 1988, in Carcavelos, Cascais.

At first, the art of Graffiti was marginalised, despised, ridiculed and practically unknown in Portugal. In the beginning of the 90's, Youth One and his friends spread the Graffiti art to the metropolitan area of Lisbon and as consequence, to the rest of the country, reaching the north and mainly the city of Porto, by the late 90's.

Nowadays it's seen as a form of Art and City Halls from the North to the South of Portugal even invest money to beautify the cities with various kind of works.
