Applying the Google Lens

in #google6 years ago (edited)

Recently I saw this interesting post about the origins of veganism. Besides the interesting historical notes, what caught my eye were the images of the old newsletter which immediately made me curious as to whether or not the OCR capabilities built into Google Photos could handle it or not.

For those of you that don't know, Google Photos has a built-in capability to read text in an image with the click of a button (and much more!)

Download the image to phone... Open with Google photos... And click the third icon on the bottom that looks like a camera lens:

Screenshot_20180423-194810~2.png

And this is the result! Cool... (You also have to click on the "Text Selection" button)

Screenshot_20180423-105729~2.png

And wow. It even was able to handle the artsy block letter of the title!

Below are the results. One interesting note is that the third page utterly failed, and I worked around it by cropping the image into two pieces and then it was able to output something on each piece.

Given that the image is very unclear in certain places, it's quite impressive what it came up with, but as I scanned the results, ultimately it was unreadable. I guess we have a ways to go with that one! You'd think all those horrible captchas they make us suffer through would have been enough.

What do you think? Find any good gems of mistranslation? Anyone else use this for this kind of task?

Thank you, Eon, for showing me where my newest toy lives. This is some of the clearest writing I've read on Steemit in some time. I'm so impressed I may even 'ting all dairy produce', Pleah-cnting and return to the VIGAN diot!

I will have fun flesh-giting the soientific evidence even though it may be licking. :P

Yes! I needed you to make that joke, thank you very much! :D

I think I've downloaded the wrong app. Microsoft Lens! Damn!

hahaha as I was reading through some it was absolutely hilarious and changes the meaning of the sentence in some.

I did not know about this feature Eon.

Those results are unexpected. I considered OCR but thought it would fail too hard.

Good experiment. Surprising results!

Surprisingly good, I assume? hehe... this could be the benchmark for how good vs humans the recognizer is. I assume there's a digitized transcript already in existence somewhere too but I haven't bothered to look for it yet ;)
