Historic river port town of Ulmarra

in #goldenhourphotography7 years ago (edited)

If you've ever traveled the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane, you've passed through the sleepy town of Ulmarra just north of Grafton.

Ulmarra was once a bustling river port located on the banks of the Clarence River. The town gets it name from a local aboriginal word meaning "bend in the river". It was one of a number of river ports, catering to the ships and boats of all types carrying goods and people up and down the river.

Today, the river is much quiter. Trucks and north coast holiday traffic drive straight through the town. But if you have the time, it's well worth a stop.

Take a wander down the main street, just off the highway, and take in the ambiance of a bygone era. Browse through the bookshop on the corner and then cross the road for a delicious pub meal at the hotel. On a nice day you can sit outside in the beergarden by the river. Very pleasant indeed!

awesome place to be @atnicholson!
What are the purple trees, Crepe Myrtles, Red buds?
They sure stand out 🍁 🍂

Thanks @shasta. The purple trees are jacarandas. There is an annual Jacaranda Festival in nearby Grafton celebrating the annual blooming of these beautiful trees. I posted about it here https://steemit.com/streetphotography/@atnicholson/street-photography-grafton-jacaranda-festival-2017
