Investing in Gold
For a long time I had not checked the price of gold. Yesterday I just happened to check and I was stunned to see the price. In Indian rupees the value of 24K 10 grams of gold is 93000, which is like crazy. I am not aware when this price shot up. Just 6 months back I had purchased some gold at a price of 78000 and now it's like 20% more, had I known then I would have made some investments in gold rather then anything else. In 1995 when I got married the price of gold was 4500 INR for 10 grams of 24K. It has appreciated so much since then.
The value of gold has always been there, since many years I have been in the habit of buying little gold every year. During Diwali time, there is one auspicious day called Dhanteras on which we believe that buying gold or any other investment is good luck, so following this ritual, every year on Dhanteras I buy little gold, which is also one form of investment for me.
The problem with we Indians is, we buy gold but we never sell it. We keep them in our lockers all our life and then on our death it gets passed on to the next generation. And I am sure, I am also going to sail in the same boat. Till date even if I have had financial crises I have never thought of selling my gold. But may be the next generation will not have the same sentiments.
Anyways, with the price going up so rapidly every year the amount of gold I buy gets lesser and lesser. This year I am not sure, how much I will be able to buy. I save up every month a little to do this once a year buying. I will have to save a little more now if I want to maintain the rhythm that I have build over the years.

You are right, there is no point in holding it. But in my part of world we normally buy gold during auspicious occasions like weddings, so then it holds a sentimental value and becomes difficult to sell
