Holy whippersnappers, those peaceful Canadians sure have some courage!

Two Canadians mining companies, Timmins Gold and Minaurum Gold, are planning to explore and develop mining deposits in Mexico's southwestern murder capital state of Guerrero. Gangs are battling for control of the opium crops, that would normally keep foreign companies at bay... but that seems to be changing.

There is already a company from Toronto, Torex Gold Resources, that has spent $800 million into an open pit mine in April. The closest town to this mine, Cocula, is where 43 college students were burned in a trash dump in 2014, apparently to silence a protest they were going to organize. But this mine is expected to produce 360,000 ounces of gold per year, for 12 years, making it the 2nd most productive mine in Mexico.

The situation is no joke though. Of the 1800 employees inMexico, 100 are security guards! The gold is transported to a custom 12-mile road they made, with security checkpoints along the way. Kidnapping of workers from gold mines a frequent occurrence in the south.

Torex plans to invest $500 million more in the coming years with another project. The existing mine, and one more, are the company's only assets. Geurrero state needs the money though, so they are happy to see the investment. All of the murder and drugs has decimated tourism, a lifeblood of their economy. Few economic opportunities exist, and mining is one of the only avenues many people have. If the Torex investment plans out, they will be mining in Mexico, and creating jobs, for the next 20-30 years.

They better watch out on the night of the dead, Hallows' Eve... Halloween. Cartels are crazy. It turns out some Candaians can be too, with gold in their eyes....
