Introducing the @Geekdom Community: A Community to Popularize Nerd Content

in #geekdom6 years ago (edited)

There's been a bit of a problem here on Steemit. Nerd content often has trouble gaining visibility. The video games tab is not even And the great thing about our happy little community is that, while we know the Steemit Inc. devs (and the scores of capable developers here on the site) are hard at work solving problems, each of us is empowered to do so ourselves.

So I've created this community because I haven't seen one like it and, frankly, it's time.

When I first got on the site, there weren't a whole lot of posts concerning this sort of thing, but the number is increasing and I think it's high time to organize.

How does it work?

Well, the hardest thing in the world is actually finding these posts consistently... which is why I'm making this community in the first place. I'll regularly browse the new tab on my feed, but the best ways to get my attention are going to be tagging your post with the 'geekdom' tag and formally introducing yourself in the comments. Do
NOT post links to your own articles, I will not resteem spammers. However if you know someone you want to be promoted on this community tell them to tag with 'geekdom' or talk a little about them in the comments (I just need a paragraph or less, please).

The votes from this community aren't worth anything and probably won't be for some time. I don't have any plans in the near term of going begging for delegation power until I have a substantial base here. The goal right now is that every day a minimum of one and a maximum of four geek-related posts will be resteemed (going to aim for two right now, but we'll see).

By next year (but probably in the next week or two) I will start releasing single posts with article summaries. This will allow people to simply follow @geekdom to get a feel for nerd content before having to commit to a subscribe.

For now, 'geek-related' means anime, video games, and tech (not generally concerning crypto or phones right now, we have enough of that). This may change as things progress (hell, everything is possibly subject to change, we're fast and loose right now).

Are you excited, yet?

Now you might be wondering what my credentials are to run a 'geek' site. Well, I've been playing video games hard core since I was around 13 (I'm currently 33). I've been watching anime and reading comic books for about as long, and I built my first computer when I was 18 (and am pretty knowledgeable about how they work).

If that doesn't impress you, how about this way cool t-shirt I got from @serenadesweetie for my birthday:

All the mother-fuckin' credentials this guy needs.

Ready for the nerdy deep end? This experiment begins NOW.

Relevant to my interests. I actually promoted a party line called "geekdom" once. How do you feel about reviews of scifi shows and movies, podcasts and general geek media stuff?

All of that sounds good. I especially want a focus on things that would normally get passed over, or that have a very niche audience. For example, I probably wouldn't want to resteem a Game of Thrones post - it'll probably get plenty of visibility just by being about one of the most popular shows of all time. However, this is not a hard rule and there might be exceptions if the post is of particular quality.

Other than the theme being a little less mainstream, the only thing I'm really worried about is quality. I want people to know that when they subscribe to @geekdom they're signing up for a regularly varied assortment of nerd posts, though having some people that get resteemed regularly for a period is probably an inevitability.
