Farm Update: 7 Egg Incubator Project Started for Baby Quails and Chickens

in #gardening7 years ago

The plan has always been to breed chickens, quails and ducks and now we've made a small step in getting started with that. We got this little incubator because eggs need like....20 days on average of constant heat and humidity to hatch (quail eggs don't need the moisture but chicken eggs do). We looked into it and even if our quail go broody, which is rare, there's only about a 5 percent success rate for them, so we're stepping in to pick that up a bit.

This holds 7 chicken eggs or a lot more quail eggs. We have 11 quail eggs in it right now and 2 chicken eggs partially because that's what we could get together in just a day.

When setting it up John decided to check the internal temp with one of our tools to test the temperature readout on the incubator, finding it to be wrong. Turns out there was a single drop on the end of the internal thermometer that was really screwing with the readout. It's all good now and is currently sitting at about 40 degrees celcius.

Stay tuned guys because quail are quite possibly the cutest tiny baby birds ever.....and we will be sharing photos!

So Your raising Quails to eat the eggs or the birds?

Both. We currently spend like 60 pesos a quail and we spend like...100 for a chicken so we're trying to bring down costs of the birds. They're our best egg producers and want more.

I fully support those who can be self-reliant. My best friend of all time has a hobby farm with chickens, sheep and fruit trees. He enjoys the benefits of his labor. I am so glad you and John choose to take those steps. Great post! You set the example!

Yeah, I'm honestly just behind on my gardening and farming. Having given our foster puppies back now we should have a lot more free time to spend on the farm.

Will that really work? All the best i will be waiting for the results.

It will, it's just got small capacity so it's more of a kids project than farm equiptment.

All the very best. I m following you for seeing this result. 😁

I hope to have some quails or chickens or even ducks someday

We have all three, we're just getting chicken and quail eggs for now. I really like quails, they're quiet and nice.

Yes they are beautiful birds but the eggs are quite small. I was always looking into getting a Silver Appleyard Duck or 2 but I think I would need to move to a better location.

I've got muscovy ducks which can be a bit more aggressive but they eat mosquitos and ticks like no other :) And they're cool looking. The eggs are small but quail produce in much less time and they need less to lay, so they've been our best producers the whole time.

Very cool, I have never tasted quail eggs before, would they be good for breakfast sandwiches?!

That is awesome! Please share the results with us :)

Oh, you'll see the results....we're now more than 2 days in on this little project.

Its very nice

Cool, looking forward to that :) Holding thumbs for the quail babies!
