Vegetable Quiz with Prizes! - The #fruitsandveggies challenge by @barbara-orenya - Identify My Entry!

Do you know what vegetable this is? If you do, you could win a prize! Come into my post for a closer look.

This is a special vegetable! It's only available in the spring. It's a perennial vegetable. Most people know it for the fall harvest of a different part of this plant, not this spring harvest. But picking this spring vegetable is necessary for the fall crop to grow well.

Here's another picture of my early spring harvest.

The early spring crop is typically purple. But later in the spring, the plant turns green. It's still good to eat, but hardly looks like it's from the same plant!

How do I eat this vegetable? I'll show you at least 5 ways I eat it, in a future post. But for now, I'll show you one of my favorite ways to eat it -- grilled!

Mini-Contest! Two Chances to Win!

In the comments down below, let me know what you think this vegetable is. I'll pick a winner at random from all the correct answers - on Sunday, July 2, 5pm Pacific Daylight Time (midnight UTC). The winner will get $2 SBD.

And if you want to guess what the pink flowers are, do the same thing. And the winner will get $2 SBD, too.

Winners Update! What are these plants? Hop shoots and redbud flowers! Here is more about How to Find, Harvest, and Use Redbud Flowers. And here is more about How to Harvest and Use Hop Shoots.

Two people had the right answer on the first plant: @michaelmcdermott and @wholesomefoods. I used a random number generator to choose the winner -- @michaelmcdermott!x mystery plant hops.JPG
x mystery plant redbud.JPGThree people had the right answer on the pink flowers: @michaelmcdermott, @wholesomefoods, and @ewkaw. That same random number generator gave me the winner -- @ewkaw!

I'm sending a $1 SBD consolation prize to @wholesomefoods. They got both answers right, but just didn't have the luck of the draw - this time!

Thanks to everyone who made a guess! I hope you had fun and will join me in a future mini-contest! And I hope you are enjoying the plants around you!

Plant List

Hops - Humulus lupulus
Radbud - Cercis canadensis

Thanks for playing my game within your challenge! I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answers. Until then, the mystery has to continue! ; )

Finally! Here are my new posts about the mystery plants --hop shoots and redbud flowers. Here's the post on hop shoots, if you are interested. It shows how I harvest and eat them. I've posted one about the redbud flowers, too.

I'm gonna go with hops spring shoots for the first one. And red bud flowers for the second one. Thanks for this opportunity! Fun game!!!! :)

Thanks for entering my mystery vegetable mini-contest! I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answers. : )

Hey! Did you announce the answers?

I'm a little slow this holiday weekend. I've got a couple errands to run. Then I'll be back with the results this evening (Monday).

Congratulations! You correctly identified the hop shoots and won the drawing in my Mystery Plant Mini-Contest. Check your wallet!

You correctly identified the Redbud flowers, but didn't win that drawing. I hope you enjoy eating hop shoots and redbud flowers, too! They are so good!

Hey! Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate the contest, I had fun partaking!!!! And thank you so much as well for the reward. I will check my wallet :) Thank you!!!! I do enjoy eating red bud flowers! And have yet to enjoy hop shoots but I am enthused to experience them in the future! Thanks for spreading good awareness and helping expand wild food knowledge! You are appreciated! Much Love!!!!!

You're welcome! For not having eaten hop shoots, you sure identified them quickly! They are so good! They are worth growing, even if you don't plan to brew beer with the hop cones. Those shoots are great! I'm slow in finishing my post about them, but I'll get there. I hope you get a chance to try them sometime!

Definitely plan to try them and grow hops in the future!!!! Yes, super amazing plant medicinally too as a mild sedative. It is good for easing anxiety. Enthused to grow it!

I use the hop cones in a lot of ways, too. I like hop tea, hop hot chocolate, and hop macaroni and cheese. :D There's definitely a lot more for me to learn about this plant, too. Good luck in growing them, too!

Amazing vegetable with different colors! Yes, it's special and looks really yummy when it's on that plate!

It is unusual how they change colors from early spring until later in the spring. But it's good eating in both cases!

You always have well-cooking on those things; good and healthy foods! ;)

Thanks, @tangmo. I have a lot of plants that are good to eat, growing in my yard. That makes it easy to eat well!

With my pleasure! It's great that you have nice garden with many things that can be eaten; roses, vegetables, etc. :)

I am pretty fortunate!

The first veggie looks like basil stems.

Thanks for entering my mystery vegetable mini-contest! I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answer. : )

Do you mind if I ask why you voted and unvoted and voted and unvoted and voted? I'm very curious (steemd sent me a bunch of notifications, and it was like playing "she loves me, she loves me not" with flower petals.

I'm glad you let me know how it looked on your end. This whole limited upvote and using percentages has just got me tied up in knots. Does someone think I was playing favorites because I voted another person at a higher percentage, even tough their comment is shorter? Does the amount of the upvote reflect the value of that comment relative to all the others? Aarggh! I can't remember what amount I upvoted everyone. Sorry for making your notification feed such a mess! The cognitive overhead for upvoting posts and comments is driving me nuts! You got the love, with flower petals, lol! : )

Ha! It's no problem. I was just wondering what was going on on your head. If it helps, I don't think anything of the upvote percentages. I figure an upvote at any percentage is approval. My goal, at least short term on Steemit, is about building a fan base who likes my content. Whether any particular piece of content is worth $ or not is a tertiary consideration. I want to build an audience for my writing and acting that follows me into the offline world.

Thanks for that feedback. I know some folks are doing tit-for-tat percentages. I'm too simple a person for all that, obviously. Good luck with building your audience. I'm a new follower! :D

Yay! Once I get to 125, I'll be posting the next part of my series Gentle Werewolf. The first part I posted a week or so ago, and there have been 5 other installments since then.

Wow. I really liked your Fir Tree freewrite! It's more true than you know, maybe!

I should add, too, that I tried once more to change my upvote and Steemit wouldn't let me! So there must be a limit on how many times a person can do that. At least there's some stop to the madness, lol!

Also: does it reimburse your voting percentage when you un-vote?

I have no idea -- probably not, lol. I think I won't be changing my upvotes in the future, come what may.

Finally! Here are my new posts about the mystery plants --hop shoots and redbud flowers. Here's the post on hop shoots, if you are interested. It shows how I harvest and eat them. I've posted one about the redbud flowers, too.

: ( can the first person to guess correctly win?? Because I have a good guess. xD
Beautiful pictures by the way, and looks delicious!

You can't win if you don't play! If nobody else gets them right, you would win for sure! : )
Glad you enjoyed my pictures - and all of this is really tasty, for sure! :D

wit looks like the wild asparagus you find in the woods ;-)

Thanks for playing -- and for your challenge. I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answers. : )

is this something from sea ?

Thanks for entering my mystery vegetable mini-contest! I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answers. : )

It looks like asparagus...Purple Asparagus!

Finally! Here are my new posts about the mystery plants --hop shoots and redbud flowers. Here's the post on hop shoots, if you are interested. It shows how I harvest and eat them. I've posted one about the redbud flowers, too.

I can't help but think the purple stems are some sort of milkweed shoots, as they look just like the ones I grow for the caterpillars, the 2nd is hops and the flowers look like Creeping Charlie (that's what we call them)

The purple and green plants were the same thing -- hop shoots. So you were half-right. I hope you enjoy eating some hop shoots, they are tasty! So are milkweed shoots, too! And Creeping Charlie, lol. So many tasty plants! (The pink flowers were from the redbud tree.)

Great post my friend, that purple one drove me crazy as I knew it wasn't asparagus, I have never seen hops in person so would never known. lol I used to have a redbud tree and it was my favorite. So beautiful in bloom. Great contest!

Here's my new post about hop shoots, if you are interested. It shows how I harvest and eat them. I've posted one about the redbud flowers, too.

Thanks, @sunscape! It is strange how the first hop shoots look so different from the ones later in the spring. They are an interesting plant! I'm glad you have enjoyed Redbud trees. They are such a pretty landscaping tree, even without eating the flowers. They are so pretty!

Thanks for stopping by, @sunscape! And thanks for entering my mystery vegetable mini-contest! I'll make 2 posts on Sunday with the answers. : )

That one has me stumped! I will be watching Sunday to here what it is.

These are not common vegetables to eat, that's for sure. But once you try them, I bet you would like them. Stay tuned for Sunday!
