Tricks and Tips

Today I'd like to share a trick you can do if you have walnut trees. It's a tested method and it works very well, I can guarantee you.

We have a huge walnut tree that must be staying least 40 years old if not older. It's a great source, we have walnuts almost every year for personal consumptions and last year I sold some as we had more than we needed.

Walnuts however can give you headaches, not only joy. Cracking walnuts can be a real pain if the shell is though. We've been struggling with this for years till someone told us what to do.

It's very simple. All you have to do is take a chainsaw and make a few lines along the trunk of the tree. It doesn't have to be deep but you have to cut through the external layer. The tree then is going to use that glue like material to heal the wounds instead of using it to harden the shells. This has to be done every year.

The wounds will heal very quickly, no need to worry about it. This way you can get some very easily crackable walnuts and it looks like it affects the colour of the nuts as well. I spoke to an old lady last year at the farmers market. She was complaining about having very hard nutshells and dark colored walnuts, which is hard to sell. I told her about this method and she was amazed, she's never heard of it. I'm curious if she gave it a try.

Wow that's absolutely amazing!!!! Resteemed and upvoted

Thank you so much, I'm glad you find it useful.

Makes sense and is very clever. I struggle with breaking Walnuts as obviously the farmers that sell them don't know about this trick either.

Thank you @cryptoandcoffee, I don't know how know it is but it should be used by everyone having this problem.

Many thanks.

Last year was the first year that the walnut trees that we planted, produced any nuts. Most of them we are growing for veneer grade timber for our children and grandchildren, but a few of them we will just harvest the nuts from. Being that the trees are relatively young, 10 years, this method would have to be used at a later date. Thanks for the info. very interesting.

Yes, indeed, you're right, at that young age this method is not applicable. As you can see, out tree is old and that's why we can use it. However, it's good to know, one day it may come in handy.
Thank you for stopping by.

I like walnuts and buy it sometimes because it is expensive. However, we have no walnut trees here in our country but makes me want to plant and do that myself lol!

You can plant one as it's easy to grow, doesn't need much care really.
