Potatoes Poppin' and More

Boy am I excited about the fact all these potato plants are busting through the soil. These were the potatoes that I had grown from seed potatoes in the first half of the season last year, and stored all winter long in a brown paper bag, to be planted this Spring.

Upon viewing the stored potatoes, they had quite literally ALL sprouted their chits inside the storage bag, so I wasn't confident they would continue to grow if they had already used up all their stored energy during the Winter. But nevertheless, I went ahead and stuffed them in the dirt.. this time inside the fenced in portion of our garden farm to protect them from predators in the night.

Some of the seed potatoes we had left over were only 1cm in diameter, (quite small) had several inch long chit growths and yet they are the ones bursting through the soil first! Bizarre.

Many of my Kiwi vines I had begun to grow last year, survived the mild Winter we had, and are beginning to come out of dormancy, racing to push out their first leaves of the season.

Still won't expect to see any kiwi this year.. perhaps another year of growth before the vines are mature enough to produce fruit.

And it looks like every single onion and shallot I planted has come up through the dirt with their spindly "leaves".. if one would call them leaves I'm not sure.

Certainly excited about home grown onions and shallots.. and the defensive properties the onions and shallots bring to the garden.. their smell wards off certain predators to my garden.. well that is also very valuable and a reason I wanted to plant them.

We also deconstructed the basement grow room this past weekend and transplanted all the Over wintered peppers plants back into the dirt!

Several of the peppers were beginning to look very stressed, although they still were producing peppers, round four. I know after a few days of acclimation to the new sunshine and temperatures swings during night and day, that these pepper trees I had growing all Winter will boom with production.

Jalapeno plant is growing a fourth set of peppers for us to enjoy.

Scorpion Pepper plant looks more like a small tree, how large the stem became over Winter. Here are several miniature scorpion peppers that had stalled growth but still ripened to a brilliant red. Lots of heat packed inside that dinky pepper.

Lettuce, Spinach going to seed soon, and Parsley, respectively. All making the transition from basement grow room to outdoor paradise. I expect to see everything explode in size once the roots take in a week. And then shoot straight to seed because we cease to have a Spring anymore.. just straight from Winter to Summer.

So many sproutlings coming up down in the farm area.. excitement boils over.

My little family is always here with me. And I am blessed by it.

I pray to Heavenly Father. Take care!

Sort:

Your potato plants have a great start. You should get a good crop from them if the weather holds.

Your onions are looking great so far.

Wow the peppers wintered well and looks like they are taking the transplanting well.

Summer comes fast when it comes.

All in all looking like you could be in for a bumper crop this season.

Thanks Eric.

Lots of work gone in.. lots of results expected!

I can still remember last year, my buddy @docroulston, telling me his parents had said to him that they love the idea of starting a garden and growing food, but that I shouldn't expect much success.....

Yeah well.... I was, and am, determined.

Most folks give up to easy! One bad season due to weather and they think it is to much for them.
If you keep at it you will have success.

It always fascinates me to see how much farther along spring is for folks who live in warmer climates! And that baby is adorable. Of course.

Thank you. Our son is a blessing. We couldn't be more grateful for him.

But I would say, that I like to consider myself an early bird to the party haha.. in terms of gardening and getting things rolling.

I made moves to keep these first year pepper plants alive through the Winter with artificial light strong enough, and now as they enter their second year of life, I should expect to see much more production out of them. You get what you work for right?

Yes, that's true! Good luck with your gardening! I will try to post some pictures of my own early attempts, "soon."

I'm trying to grow potatoes for the first time, this year; but, I'm afraid they aren't going to come up. How deep did you plant, and how long did it take them to grow above the soil line?

So this year and last, I planted my potatoes in mounds as deep as I could bury them honestly.. which was 4 to 6 inches deep. Last year, before planting, I cut my seed potatoes into sections, each with their own chits, let them sit and dry for a week before planting with the chits up.

Potatoes have a top and bottom, which can be researched quickly if you hadn't known that. So planting orientation is important.

This year I was lazy and planted whole seed potatoes, chits up, in the mounds. Not sure what will vary in terms of production, since last year I hauled in a whole lot of potatoes with the cut method.

Iv also read that store bought potatoes meant to be eaten, not planted, will have a tough time growing if you decide to plant them, due to the waxy spray they coat them with... but I did just that last year and had a huge harvest from them. I used "seed potatoes" and store bought "food" potatoes.. both had all come thru in about 2-3 weeks.

I believe the timing is dependent upon warmth of soil, moisture of soil, and the progress of the potato itself.

Not sure why but the idea of overwintering pepper plants has never crossed my mind! Do you /anyone know about the difference in pepper production as the plants age? I wish they would just turn into giant fruitful pepper trees!

Oh.. the internet is abound with examples of how insane the production becomes as the plant ages. I saw one video of a man who overwintered two hot peppers of some kind and ended up with two buckets worth of peppers from two plants in early June! Woah!

I hope to see some similar results. Since my peppers already have massive tree trunk-like stems, all that energy stored inside to immediately begin fruiting, all they need is some more room to begin growing again.

They really do become “trees”. Their stems become woody and brown instead of green. And obviously the diameter of the stem continues to increase.. I’ll take a picture of the stem next time.

That is so absolutely cool! I would love to see the updates on those stems. I told a friend who grows peppers and the idea about knocked his socks off!

Makes sense since the plant can go a bit more dormant and give energy to the trunk instead of trying to start fresh each year.

Hopefully you get TONS of peppers! Hot sauce out the yazoo!

When I finally manage to grow peppers, I think I'll have a successful garden.

Ahhh you can pop a pepper or two in the tower you just built with the kids! At the top! Would be neat, but your call of course.

I did exactly that. Well, some saved pepper seeds. I think.

But, I'm not sure the tower is in a sunny enough place.

Hmmm.. perhaps it will still grow.. just a bit leggy and thin..
