Board Gaming - Red 7
Red 7
In amongst the big gaming session that the last few games have been from, I also played a few rounds of this little card game. It's a really simple game, but also has an interesting twist to the familiar high card wins games.
A selection of he cards, showing the game it would change things to if played to the rules pile, and it's value if played to your own pile
On your turn you can play a better card(s), or change the game that's being played. At the end of your turn, you have to be leading the current game that's being played or you're out of the round.
Did I say "Change the game"? Why yes, I did. That's what they call it, as there are 7 different 'games' (or 'win conditions' if you prefer) being played. You start off playing "Red", which is simply having the highest card in your play area, but there is also Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet, which all have varying requirements.
You start with 7 cards in your hand, and you either play to your area, or to the game pile (to change the game), or to your area and then to the game pile. (you could also pass and lose, but that doesn't sound like a winning plan)
The different games include: most cards below 4, all cards of one colour, or all cards of different colours, having even cards, or a run of numbers or the most of a single number.
I found this to be quite a quick game, really easy to pick up and learn. It would probably be great for kids, and there are a few comments about it being "like Fluxx, if Fluxx was a good game". Personally I enjoy fluxx already, but it can have issues with it's random runtime, while Red 7 has a definite limitation in that each player only has 7 cards, so at most the game will run for 7 rounds before there is a winner.
