Worms WMD Review - Now also on the Nintendo Switch

More than a year after the release on other consoles, Worms WMD is winding its way to the Switch. Is Nintendo's console a new cool multiplayer game richer, or does the Worms series begin to lose its shine?

Developer Team17 is in a difficult position when it comes to the Worms games. On the one hand weird trips like a 3d version are not appreciated. On the other hand, people are not happy when the series stays the same too much. It is clear in any case that Worms is at its strongest in 2d and with Worms WMD Team17 adds some extra elements to refresh things.

Basically Worms WMD is just the Worms you know: turn-based battles between worms with exaggerated accents and names that they actually can not. In addition, the game again has the characteristic awkward controls, so you sometimes just make a wrong jump with a succession of explosions and disappointments as a result. But that is part of it.

A thousand bombs and sacred grenades

Of course you have the standard Worms weapons in your arsenal such as grenades, dynamite, the holy grenade and super sheep. Sniper rifles and turrets can now also be found in the levels. Are you the first to be there? Then you can do a lot of damage. A worm from the opponent can also kick you off that spot.

The same applies to new vehicles in the form of mechs, tanks and helicopters. If you step in, you are mobile and you can do a lot of damage. Is your time up and you end up close to an opponent? Then of course your vehicle will be taken away and you will be the bobbin. So you are never supreme and you must always pay attention.

The game now even has a craft system, allowing you to create weapons with items that you find on the battlefield. All these additions do not detract from the Worms formula, but ensure just enough innovation that makes the game worthwhile for fans of the series.

Multiplayer has the focus

The most important thing in Worms is of course the multiplayer, because you will experience the most fun there. This can be done locally, with both players own Joy-Con, between multiple Switches or online. For once you're on the train, the game also has a stack of fine single player levels.

Fun are mainly the single player challenges where you are placed in an almost impossible situation. By making smart use of the limited resources you can still be the winner. For those who play alone, Worms WMD is a bit scanty. That is not very bad, because this is really a multiplayer game and even one of the best on the Nintendo Switch.

Worms WMD is also available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Mac.

Conclusion

Worms WMD is one of the best multiplayer games for the Nintendo Switch. Although this is mainly Worms as we are used to, Team17 refreshes the familiar formula with some nice additions.

➕ Worms at its best, nice new additions

➖ Limited campaign, camera sometimes swims in the wrong direction so you do not always see the best moments

Nice post, thank you! It´s the best Worms game since Armageddon IMO.
Not sure I agree with the issues about the control scheme. Mapping aiming to the same stick as movement makes sense, when the other stick controls camera. Also the game is designed for single joycon play with couch coop, so putting on the single stick would make switching to single joycon mode a bit easier.
Still, I agree with the overall sentiment. If you like Worms, you´ll love this.

I personally didn't mind the 3D version of Worms. ^_^

It 'did' take some getting used to however and the controls and user interface could have been better.

Thank you for the low-down on WMD though! :c)
