Always wanted to step into the skin of a white wolf? That is possible with Okami, a cell-shaded game that combines action, puzzles and platform elements. Ten years ago, the Japanese started spontaneously on their knees, by way of. Many gamers worship Okami because of the quirky artistic face. If it has passed you by, then read our Okami HD Review!

Okami HD is a remaster of the earlier game, which appeared on the PlayStation 2 for the first time in 2006. Later, the Wii and PS3 were put on again, but the big hit is now on the Xbox One (X) and PlayStation 4 (Pro ). Because yes, there is 4K support.

Unfortunately with only 30 frames per second, but the game certainly comes into its own with 4K. And that means playing the leading part in a colorful Japanese painting in full glory, because Okami has that impression.

As an artistic wolf

You control the wolf Amaterasu, a goddess of the sun, but clearly in a different form. As soon as you start Okami, your mission will be made clear during a slightly too long introduction of half an hour of texts that you will have to read.

In short, it means that an ancient enemy, Orochi, has done all kinds of wrong things again. And you can do the dirty work. And for that you need so-called painting techniques.

The beginning of Okami does not really stand the test of time. Despite being enchanted by the atmosphere and appearance of the game, it is slightly annoying that you have to read text and click through to get the story. It is a remaster, but a remake was more in place. So keep in mind that your Okami does not start up as fast, but especially starts at a good time.

And from there you can start drawing in a playful way in a beautiful story where a feeling of Rare is soon called up. Recently there was a game released in which you have to sign, namely Max: The Curse of Brotherhood. But that is a game of a very different kind and in which drawing also happens in a completely different way.

In Okami you use a brush to solve puzzles and defeat enemies. That sounds childish, but it certainly is not. The gameplay is very original and soon you become familiar with your first arts and brush.

A brush as a weapon

Think, for example, of a situation where you are somewhere and clearly know where to go. By working with your brush, a kind of bridge will be built, so you can reach that place. Or not enough light on the horizon?

You draw some stars and you can continue. Although it looks a bit silly on paper, you have to assume that the atmosphere in Okami is fantastic. Completely quirky and full of Japanese influences. The only bad thing about that gameplay is that control does not always work fine.

Using a paint brush with an analog stick ensures precision, but that precision occasionally goes together with unnecessary irritations. Great if you continue, but annoying if you get annoyed at the controls. And with that Okami is not always of this time. Although the Okami HD Review has to say that you also quickly look through it, because if you chop enemies in half with a few clicks, it feels very good!

In total, you will gradually release a little more than ten paint techniques and you will always feel like you are making progress. That's why Okami never gets boring. The comparison with Zelda is also made quickly by the adventure that you go into where you have to solve puzzles in many environments and comb areas.

You also get help from your sidekick Issun. Still, it is not good to compare the game too much with Zelda, because Okami has a very own face. Fortunately. And a must for anyone who loves Japanese myths.

Outdated design choices

The game has absolute right to exist and it's cool to see that such a game with such a unique appearance has come out on the current consoles. Moreover, a nice addition to people who do not have a Nintendo platform. And although you can safely lose a few dozen hours in the game, it is good to state in this Okami HD Review that Okami is not for everyone and some things are not entirely of today.

The slow start has already been cited in this Okami HD Review, but reading laps of text remains an old-fashioned fact. It is no longer from now to get a (nice) story presented in this way. It is occasionally a tad unclear where you have to go for the continuation of your quest, although the people with patience pretty quickly see how the fork in the stem stabs.

But it is, again, a game where your patience is put to the test every now and then. Though you will never learn Japanese with liters of patience, which is a shame because the achievements are in Japanese. An inexplicable choice and in our opinion something too hardcore.

Conclusion

In that respect, Okami HD leaves us with mixed feelings for the Okami HD Review. On the one hand it is a great game with a very cool look, an interesting story and unique gameplay. On the other hand, there are occasionally some things that are no longer entirely from now and where your patience is sometimes put to the test.
But that pales with the rest of the splendor. And people who quietly sit down will be embraced with a beautiful adventure that mainly has more than right to exist. Sit down and be enchanted!
