The Best PC Games of 2017

We are at that time of the year where it is safe to wrap up the best games of the year. 2017 was a decent year for gaming with some great titles and some huge disappointments like Dawn of War 3 and Eternal Crusade, games I still play from time to time simply because I'm a huge Warhammer40k fanatic, but objectively they did not deliver. I haven't tried Mass Effect Andromeda yet, I don't know will I ever do. 2017 didn't really had that epic game that everyone would talk about, we had some great sequels but nothing that really stands out strong. As a hardcore RPG and RTS player you can expect a lot of those type of games on this list. Here are some of my favorite PC games of 2017 in no particular order, every one of these games is worth your time and they all have @moon32walker seal of approval.

ELEX

Once you finish this game you end up with a feeling of huge satisfaction, not because it is finally over, it is because you did it, you survived all the harshness the word of Magalan threw at you. This is RPG you were all waiting for. Piranha Bytes type of game (Gothic and Risen series) in a brand new postapocalyptic setting with all the vibes of Fallout and Gothic games combined. Elex is one of those old school games with a great sense of exploration, character progression and hard combat where every +5 attack damage means a damn lot. The mainstream sites gave the game bad reviews, and oh boy, were they wrong with this one.

Torment: Tides of Numenera

Let the tides take you is the name of the game here. This is a reader's game, you will not be satisfied with this if you don't have the patience to read through hundreds of thousands of dialogue lines in this game. This is fiction at it's best. Tides of Numenera is a game where we play as an immortal being, a castoff from a changing god who did a millenia of bad deeds to an earth one billion years in the future, a place where magic and strange technology coincide. Your goal in all of this is to try to navigate through this strange world and find out how much does one life really matter. I had a lot of fun exploring this game and you will too if you like to read.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

Larian Studio is on fire, they keep on producing great games. Original Sin 2 improved on everything Original Sin offered and expanded it with more of everything. Companions are more interesting, there is an epic amount of loot to collect, steal, buy or discover. There are more schools of magic, all adding to even more combat orientated combos and interactions with the environments. Story is as compelling as ever, and you just can't go wrong with this game.

Total War: Warhammer 2

Fantasy Warhammer found the great host in Creative Assembly to recreate all the creatively insane races of Warhammer. Warhammer 2 introduced some of the fan favorite races like Skaven and Lizardmen, placed them on a new continent and introduced new Vortex campaign improving from the one from the first game with more dynamic gameplay and the sense of urgency. Not too long after game was released CA launched Immortal Empires and thus allowing owners of the both games one grand campaign with all the races of both games to play with. Amount of content there is hard to describe, endless replayability and endless strategic fun.

Grim Dawn: Ashes of Malmouth

This is an expansion from one of the best ARPG games of 2016. Grim Dawn: Ashes of Malmouth brings two more classes on the table and two more huge acts to explore. What is so good about this one, well, it is how they manage to recreate the gothic atmoshphere and the sense of impending doom and create a cohesive balance between the two. And well, there is the tons of loot to collect and monsters in all shapes and forms to slay. ARPG for the purists.

Path of Exile: Fall of Oriath

Another expansion to an already established king of ARPGs, Path of Exile: Fall of Oriath is a huge game. I always like to compare this expansion to Diablo ones, Diablo 2 expansion had one extra story Act, Diablo 3 expansion had one extra story Act. Path of Exile expansion has six extra story Acts! Oh, did I mention it is completely free to play and it's end game is way more interesting than the Diablo 3 one. This is a full package game any fan of Action Role Playing Games must play at least once.

Spellforce 3

Last but not the least is Spellforce 3, I didn't give the game the best of scores, the lack of polish can be seen a lot while playing this game. Few more months of development and bug ironing would of done wonders for this game. However, even in this state I enjoyed it quite a lot. The game is a hybrid of RPG and RTS genres and both of those genres are represented well here, as a huge fan of both of those gaming genres, this game satisfied both those gaming needs. Two games in one, great characters and story, this game can absolutely stay on this list.

So many of these look cool. I haven't played a PC game in years. I want to buy smth that is fun, interesting, some sort of indie game from STEAM, any recommendations?

Well, to tell you the truth I don't play many indie games, I always go for full blown hardcore ARPGs, RPGs and RTS games. To get things started just scroll through the steam free to play list and if you don't find anything to your liking, you can't go wrong with Path of Exile.

Good picks (I would have chosen the same)! I'm fan of the Gothic franchise and when I saw the trailer/gameplay for ELEX I was excited, Gothic set in a post-apocalyptic future :D. Did you ever play Planescape: Torment? Tides of Numenera does seem to be a spiritual successor to Planescape. What RPG's did you play? or What's your favourite RPG? I'm a big fan of Fallout and Baldur's Gate, those two shape my high school years :)).

Of course I played Torment, one of the finest games ever created. I played most of the RPGs released in for the last 20 years. You can check my older posts to see the scope of things :)

Cool, I'll check them out! In this day and age it's hard to find someone who played the "golden era" games (eh... maybe it's to exaggerated to say that), nowadays the don't make RPG's the way they used to (well, a few games that do look like Baldur's Gate, e.g. Tyranny, Pillars of Eternity). P.S. did you play Shadowrun (I mean the new games that came out over the last years)?

Yes I played all three new Shadrowrun games. Cyberpunk mixed with fantasy with great stories to explore. I kinda wish there are more Shadowrun games. Can't wait for Pillars of Eternity 2.

Did you also try Shadowrun Boston Lockdown :D ?. I'd like to go on a run with a human player, I've been playing (Shadowrun) Boston only with NPC in my team :(.

Not that one, very much a downgrade if you compare it to Return, Dragonfall and Hong Kong.

Yeah, I've read the reviews... but being in the Shadowrun world and having online gaming support...

They are fine games and not blockbusters, but Nier Automata is GOTY imo!

Could very much be, for me it is a three way tie, Numenera, ELEX and Warhammer 2.

After full four years due to Grim Down I started playing again

Quality game can get any old fuck to play again :)

Smrade haha

I have heard of most of those games, yet I haven't been able to play it. Guess it's just the lack of money and wanting specific games that I know I will enjoy, but hoping for 2018 to have a lot of great games!

I always pick the games with good story, replayability, decent length, preferably RPGs or RTSs. There is always something good there. 2018 will be interesting, we will see how it plays out.

Ahead of me waiting for 10 weekends, now I know where to spend some free time- Total War: Warhammer 2! Thanks you for this review.

You can't go wrong with Total War: Warhammer 2. Huge game, say goodbye to your social life after :)

Lol :) I will try to maintain my relationship with the rest of the world at least through the Steemit ;)

It's funny, how I would have picked completely different games. Some of these I have not even heard of :D

2017 was the year of PUBG.

Sure everyone talks about PUBG, it is like Dayz and some other games with same old concept of battle arena. I still haven't tried the game even though it blew up in popularity. I always have something that interests me more on the gaming scene like these games above :) Trust me, they are great :)

It might be an old concept, but the feeling it creates is new.
I don't like it anymore now that v 1.0 is released, but maybe I'll get used to it ...

The games above all look like the diablo-type action rpgs to me and I don't really enjoy those anymore.
I might give them a shot some time later, maybe ...

Only two are Action RPGs, Grim Dawn and Path of Exile. Torment and Original Sin 2 are turn based RPGs. The rest are different genres.
Go with ELEX 1st, it is something special, after couple of hours in you will probably hate me :) Few days after you will say, thank god for @moon32walker and his recommendation :)

@moon32walker you should look up BattleForge and/or BattleForge Reborn

I thought BattleForge was long dead, I used to play the game back in the day.

its being revived here https://forum.skylords.eu/

Only Football manager :)

This is a very nice compilation of the games for the year 2017;) Unfortunately I had less time to play this year, but the one or other game from this list I will certainly play next year;))

I hope you had a happy Christmas;)

I will loved to play the game, thanks for sharing bro..
