Syberia 2 Switch Review - Continues in story, not in the rest

Sometimes you play a game, but you stay with a lot of questions. Like Syberia and luckily Syberia 2 exists. But making a second part is as good as its predecessor is difficult. If you want to know if the developer Microids has succeeded, then read our Syberia 2 Switch review.

Kate Walker is on her way to Syberia, together with her friends Hans Voraldberg and Oscar the automaton (a kind of robot). Syberia is a magical land with blue grass and living mammoths. No one knows whether it exists, but your ultimate goal is to reach this magical land with mammoths in this puzzle game.

The same atmosphere, the same magic

Syberia 2 further elaborates on the atmosphere that was created in the first part. You still have the idea that you are in a world that is similar to the world we live in, but is not exactly the same. You still manage Kate and travel with the same train and the same friends. Because of this you are soon back in the flow and it seems like you never started another game. Yet not everything is the same as in part one.

And that is not bad, when it comes to the atmosphere and the characters. The story is of course a sequel so it would also be strange if suddenly there is someone else with whom you have to solve puzzles. The game pulls out all the stops to indicate that Syberia 2 connects smoothly to the first game. So much that you sometimes just have the idea that you play part one.

Not for the person who does not know part one

And that is exactly the biggest problem of Syberia 2. You are thrown into the game without summary, without explanation. If you have not played part one, you will not understand anything that happens in part two. Even the scene at the beginning of the game does not tell you much about the story that preceded Syberia 2. If you want to know this story, you will just have to play the first part.

This ensures that Syberia 2 has a much smaller target group than part one. A fan of point-and-click puzzle games will not just buy a game that does not explain at the beginning. Even if you did, there is a big chance that you do not like the game, just because you do not understand it.

Why change if it works?

The control of Syberia has therefore remained the same. Kate still has her notebook in which she keeps everything. The puzzles work the same and are still not so difficult that they can not be solved and Kate will never let you do anything stupid. Except when it is written like that. Here, too, you can see that part two builds heavily on part one.

This includes the autosave option. This lifesaver will also be of service to you this time and it's nice to know that you never have to do whole pieces again when your Switch suddenly fails.

Why not change if it does not work?

But here again is a problem. Just like in the previous part, the music sometimes falls away and you walk around silently until you solve a part of a puzzle. The game still looks dated at times. The button to run does not lock your Switch this time, but walking is still not smooth. Sometimes you run into things where you are sure that you can just walk over it. Like an invisible wall somewhere or a bridge where you can not walk underneath.

And sometimes you walk somewhere over, of which you are certain that it should not be possible, or ethical. Innocent examples of this are thresholds over which you float or a bench that seems to be on your path all the time until you walk past it and suddenly it is behind you. Somewhat less innocent are the people you go over. These people are clearly part of the background, because you can not talk to them and they are treated like a bank or door.

Conclusion

Syberia 2 is a great sequel to anyone who really liked Syberia. You're in the story, you're used to the controls and the atmosphere of the game and you just want to know how it ends. For everyone who did not play part one this is unfortunately a traitor, a game that sticks too much to the previous part will simply not be fun for you.

Pros

➕ Just as atmospheric as part 1
➕ Autosave option
➕ Puzzles are not extremely difficult

Cons

➖ Has the same bugs as part one
➖ Does not give a summary at the beginning
➖ Is not for new players
