A year ago Steep came on the market, finally a sports title that took place in the snow. The concept was interesting: a large open world, snowboarding, skiing, but also paragliding and the use of a wingsuit belonged to the possibilities. Unfortunately, the elaboration left something to be desired for the game to really rise to a great height. Now comes Ubisoft with a huge expansion called: Road to the Olympics. Does this expansion make Steep what it should have been?

The road to that coveted place at the Olympic Games

Next year in February, the Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will take place. Olympic parts are also skiing and snowboarding there. Steep lets you walk the road to this great event. Through qualifications and all kinds of assignments that you receive gradually, you eventually become good enough to place yourself. A great detail is the fact that all jobs are authentic, so you rage about the same snow as your heroes. Unfortunately, in addition to the lavish use of the Olympic logo, this is the only authentic thing about the expansion.

You can not take it against the official athletes, but they do occasionally pass by in films prior to events. Also your own choice is fairly limited, you can choose from a number of free generic athletes and a country. Furthermore, the experience is rather superficial and you do not need to start the expansion here. It largely revolves around the gameplay itself. One of the pitfalls of the original was the monotony and you naturally wonder if Road to the Olympics is varied enough.

Enough new content and freestyls as absolute topper

Road to the Olympics is the only two parts skiing and snowboarding, because paragliding and flying your wingsuit is of course no Olympic part. Fortunately, this expansion is full of new challenges. For example, you can do a slalom, control a halfpipe, freestylen (including grinding) and make gigantic airs in specially organized events. The slalom you have in two variants and is clearly the most difficult of all. Firstly, it goes incredibly fast and a mistake means end of exercise. Freestyle is the best of all, here you can string the most crazy combos together. In total you can get a few tens of hours of extra play time with this new content.

There is also a completely new Asian environment, including villages, matching music and lots of fresh powder. Although the environments are not necessarily very special after a while, it is a nice addition. It is advisable to cruise around a bit, because there are also many nice jumps and such in the new environment. Especially if you have enough of the constant pressure of the Games. Those moments certainly occur, because unfortunately Road to the Olympics also brings a number of problems. That has everything to do with the new parts.

What are you actually doing?

As you can read, the new parts revolve around technique and timing, as you would expect from a game like this. However, it turns out that the control of these elements and the general design are not completely perfected. What is worrying for a game that goes into the e-sports segment and offers a large-scale competition around the Olympics. One of the biggest problems is the positioning of the camera. For the slalom and freestyle parts it is too close to your avatar and it does not always go well. Because of this you often can not look good for you. The successful achievement of these components is therefore partly based on simply remembering what it looks like for you.

This problem also occurs with the halfpipe part, where the camera sometimes dives under the world and is not well positioned. Because of this, tricks do not come out of the paint, you lose speed because you tip the halfpipe incorrectly and other irritations pop up. After a while you learn to deal with these defects, but in the first place they should not even be allowed to. In addition, the technical components also show that the control provides too little control, too often it happens that your avatar does not do what you want or does something well, but that it is certainly not due to you. For an e-sports game these are worrying issues.

Beat that money out of your pocket again

Perhaps the biggest downside to this entire expansion, is the fact that it is not included with the Season Pass. Ubisoft casually says that the Season Pass was meant for the already released content. So you can knock an additional €29.99 out of your pocket if you want to play this expansion. To our knowledge that is too high a price, assuming you bought the game and perhaps also the Season Pass. There is certainly enough content to be found in the expansion, but this is not in relation to the price. For such an amount they could have offered more sponsors, real athletes, more depth in the story, better management and so on.

Conclusion

Road to the Olympics is an expansion that offers a lot of content and finally adds some more variety to Steep. Nevertheless, the DLC suffers with enough problems and there is a ridiculously high price tag, so you really have to think whether you want to purchase it. Were you ready with Steep fairly quickly? Then you have to ignore this extension. Do you play Steep for at least two hours a day and can not you get enough of it? Then you may consider it carefully, but it might be more convenient to wait until an offer comes.
