Dead Rising 4 PS4 Review - Crazy weapons

The battlefield of the undead has been around for more than ten years. In 2006 the first Dead Rising game appeared. And since then several parts have appeared. The addictive gameplay element is mainly in the fun of using all objects to make zombies even more dead than they already are. Drilling machines, a piece of meat, a hedge trimmer. Nothing is to crazy. The previous Dead Rising game, particle 3, has been received slightly less. Players acted in the shoes of a completely different character, while the series became popular with the photographer Frank West in the leading role. In part 4 this man of middle age has returned proudly.

The madness of Black Friday

Dead Rising 4 starts with Black Friday. The hype from America caused a small hysteria at the end of last month in our small country. Never before has the turnover been so great. People surfed massively online and at shops to exchange the contents of the wallet for cool games, movies, gadgets and what not. In America, people are massively on the streets and in Dead Rising 4 we open with this craziness. A madness with a zombie outbreak, of course.

Dead Rising 4 has already come true?

We almost hear you think "Was not Dead Rising 4 released earlier?" Yes, that's right. For the Xbox One, a year ago. Now, a year later, the game was released for the PlayStation 4 with all add-ons: Frank Rising, Super Ultra Dead Rising 4 Mini Golf and Capcom Heroes. Not really worth the extras, but if you have both consoles and have not played the game yet, you might as well go for the complete package.

It is of course just about the main game, the story. That this time you go through alone, while you could play together in previous Dead Rising games. Now you have separate missions to play together, but the main story is a single player only adventure. And there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, that is enjoyment. It is addictive to look for blue prints so that you can combine crazy armaments and make weapons. Dead Rising is not a series that takes itself seriously and so you should especially enjoy all the craziness that comes your way.

A crazy world

Because you will experience a lot of bizarre situations. Not only do you have to take on zombies, the whole world is a complete mess and therefore you will also have to fight against people and complete idiots. A tad of The Purge films so that complete anarchy prevails and it is a matter of life or death. In which you are looking for everything around you to survive. Although that is not too difficult, because by omitting a fight against time, which was so iconic for the series, you can do everything at your 'dead' convenience. Moreover, you earn XP and you thus gain skill points including for example more life. So the game is not really challenging.

But it is entertaining. The fun is in the jokes Frank makes, the crazy weapons you use (getting a trophy because you smash a zombie with a piece of meat for example!) And exploring freely. The missions that you go through are full of events in which you can help a citizen in need, for example, from growling zombies. And in the meantime, it does not get boring to let go of the photographer in you and to shoot dirty pictures. The more blood, the better! There is the new feature of the Exosuit. Because of all this Dead Rising 4 is not bored for a moment... ..do?

Some more?

Yes and no. Because of the over the top action and the hordes of zombies you sometimes have to catch your breath. Dead Rising 4 is not a game that you want to play for hours on end. Although the game is really not boring, the events are sometimes repetitive and you do not always want to fight crazy people. What then needs to be done to progress in the story. For variety you can play add-ons like golf. But the question is who is waiting for that. Then you better start another game from your collection.

The big package suggests a little more than it has in-house, like many extra narrative missions for example. And with that, the game disappoints. This does not alter the fact that the main game itself is very entertaining and well worth it. Certainly the fact that you no longer have to fight against time is very pleasant.

Conclusion

We therefore embrace Frank West with open arms. Nothing wrong with a middle-aged man who can still kick ass! Are you looking for a cool zombie game on your PlayStation 4, then Dead Rising 4 is definitely worth it. Consider it only as an adventure and not as the game that you want to have hours in your console in the coming weeks. The game offers enough innovation, but is also not so groundbreaking other than the previous parts that you must necessarily have played this.
