InnerSpace Review - A closed open world

When a new game comes on the market, you know what you can expect from it nine times out of ten. Every genre has its main lines that are kept to this. From time to time, titles come on the market that have a lacquer on everything and offer something special. Good examples are Journey and ABZU. Yet you do not see these games often, because these kinds of titles are absolutely not for everyone. Nevertheless, Polyknight Games has chosen to venture into this type of games with InnerSpace as a result. That the game brings a totally different experience, of course does not mean that it is a good title.

Inner space

In InnerSpace you are a flying creation that is used to preserve the history of the dying 'Inverse' for the future. To do this you must help 'The Archeolist' to find different relics and lost gods. By storing their stories you can record the history of the Inverse. The problem, however, is that there is little to no information available where these relics and gods can be found. So it is literally a quest, where you are dropped into the world and you decide where you are going. The Archeolist occasionally has some small clues, but mainly you are dependent on yourself.

A closed open world

The world in which you end up is extremely special. The Inverse consists of different spheres and here the adventures take place. So you end up in a closed open world, but here you can fly infinite. So you can decide for yourself where you are going. The closed open world gives a strange, yet very bold effect. In addition, the environments consist of mysterious forms with special color combinations. You can also dive underwater and the waves make hypnotic movements, which fits perfectly with the rest of the world. It is all very strange, but it makes for an impressive whole.

Shadow of the Colossus

The relics you are looking for are scattered across the different levels. Often these are hidden in secret corridors or somewhere deep in the sea. The gods, however, are on life after death and you must first liberate them from this state. In other games this often means that you always have to meet the same pattern to get this done. In InnerSpace, however, you always have to do something different to awaken a god, and what that is you have to figure out for yourself. This not only ensures variation, but also for very nice moments. The game changes at a given moment in a Shadow of the Colossus-like experience, which makes a lot of difference.

Small corridors come with small problems

What makes the impression less is the steering. In general it is good and ensures that you can fly nicely relaxed, which provides an almost relaxing therapy. You can decide for yourself where you are going, without being bound by, for example, a time limit. Only the control should have been slightly less sensitive. You will not be bothered by this for the most part, but if you end up in small corridors, it can sometimes happen that you fly against walls, because your flight machine just reacts to your commands just too quickly. Fortunately, you can not die in InnerSpace, so it does not cause a lot of frustration, but it can sometimes be a little annoying.

Please wait

As already indicated in the introduction, InnerSpace is absolutely not for everyone and that is not only because it is so different from other games. There is one thing that you absolutely have to meet: you have to be patient. You go on a search and that is exactly what you have to do. So you will not be told where you should go and what you should do there. It can therefore happen that you do not make progress because you have not found what you can get in the adventure. However, looking for ways to continue with your adventure will not take hours. The levels are in fact of a certain size that prevent that. Yet some gamers will be able to drop out. It is true that once you have found the way to continue your journey, the satisfaction is very great.

It is only a pity that the developer has assumed that players will be busy searching for a long time. If you find everything fairly quickly, InnerSpace does not last very long. Yes, you can choose to find all collectibles, but once you have finished the game, the game simply loses its power. Now the game is offered for only twenty euros, so you can not expect dozens of hours of gameplay, but a handful of extra levels would certainly have done the game well.

Conclusion

InnerSpace is a wonderful relaxed adventure that takes you to a wonderful world. Here you can fly infinite, even if it is a closed world. You can not die, so the game will not frustrate you either. You can go on a search at your pace. The game also gives you great experiences by having to liberate the gods. However, pay attention: you really have to go to research literally, so it can sometimes be that you do not make progress for a while and are therefore a bit 'stupid' flying through the world. However, once you have found what you need to move forward, the reward is very large. If you find everything quickly, then InnerSpace is a bit on the short side.

Pros

➕ Great color use
➕ Special environments
➕ Lovely relaxed gaming
➕ Freeing gods is always different

Cons

➖ Control could have been slightly looser
➖ Could have had more levels
➖ Chances are that you sometimes fly 'aimlessly'

Sounds like my kind of thing. I just don’t have time for anything way too vast.

I keep meaning to try Witcher 3 but I know that I’ll barely get through it:
