Human: Fall Flat Review - Puzzles to solve while being harassed by others

Human: Fall Flat has been available on several different platforms for some time, a game that combines platform action with physics-based puzzles and swollen rag dolls that make even the simplest tasks an entertaining exercise where you have full control over your limbs. It's like Gang Beasts, but instead of fighting your friends, you're working side by side to solve puzzles thanks to the game's new co-op update - something we've been dived into recently.

The puzzles you tackle with your silly little puppet are quite simple to start with, such as using L2 and R2 (on the PlayStation 4) to grab things with each arm and put these objects on buttons or get them out of the way to get. However, it soon becomes much more difficult. You must quickly swing rope or throw things through amen to get further. At the same time, the challenge is also to figure out what you have to do. By balancing the nonsensical nature of the obtrusive character and the question of how you progress, Human: Fall Flat will come up with ingenious puzzles that will keep you busy for some time.

As you can imagine, the multiplayer update significantly changes the game, as single player maps are now being used again to play with friends. We are also treated to a brand new level with a temple theme. Between one and eight players can make their way through the ten different maps. The fun is not so much of efficient puzzle solving, but often because it is much more difficult when you play with more than one player. For example, the simple task of lifting a pole becomes an uncoordinated mess because players struggle to control their own character, as well as trying to work with other players. And then there are also players who deliberately try to derail the whole process by getting hold of each other...

Although the multiplayer aspect does not actually make the game much easier (just not), it does provide a lot of fun. Where you're probably running around in the singleplayer and progressing pretty fast, you can spend centuries in a section with your friends, because this chaos is the fun of these kind of 'physic-based' games. As with Gang Beasts, the simple action of gripping can bring endless hours of amusement and in a water map we even had to take a break through all the laughter.

Such is Human: Fall Flat a game that absolutely must be played with a decent headset, because connecting with random players creates one of the most frustrating imaginable experiences. You can not laugh with them and they will just stop you. Just like in real life, if people try to stop you, you might as well laugh and joke as this happens.

What we found somewhat disappointing is that the multiplayer (and therefore also the game as a whole) is a bit on the short side, with very few maps, many of which are very easy to play through at the beginning. We also had some connection problems that we have to mention, but this happened rarely and the game worked well for the rest. Steam Workshop support would be a good addition, because this is a game that you want to go back to time and time again, but with more content.

We do appreciate the variation we saw in the levels. A level lets you climb from and to train carriages from one window to another, while in the next level you just have to lie around and climb a castle. The castle level was in fact one of the highlights, where we even use catapults to shoot ourselves and friends over the map.

That variation is also there with regard to the 'visuals'. Although the game contains light gray shades in abundance, if you get further, brightly colored environments appear. What is beautiful about these are the environments that are extremely simple and uncomplicated in terms of design. Because of this, it almost never happens that you have to think about what or what you can interact with. You can also customize your avatar, to show it as a construction worker or for example someone from the cast of Breaking Bad.

Noteworthy is also the option to have another friend participate through 'couch co-op' in split screen. If a friend comes to visit unexpectedly while you try to lay down a board or something similar, it can indent to help you. You can also do this via Share Play, so if someone has the game you can also play with someone who does not have the game.

Human: Fall Flat does almost exactly what is on the packaging, all the way with other players. There are your falls waiting while you try to help or hinder others and this is why the multiplayer is much more fun than the single player. Yes, there is fun to play in the levels alone, but nothing comes close to trying to climb something while someone grabs your spongy head.

➕ Hilarious entertainment as a multiplayer game; ingenious puzzles; funny storyteller; unexpected situations.

➖ Rare short connection problems; on the short side.
