Lead popping and killing demons. It is daily cost in the world of DOOM. The lightning fast shooter is now making its debut in the world of VR, virtual reality. The DOOM VFR review lets you travel to Mars to collect your ticket to Hell. Are you resistant to what is coming?

Over the top weapons, hordes of demons and a lot of explosive action. That is how you can best describe DOOM in a few words. The first-person shooter series from developer id Software was resuscitated last year and the outcome was a fast-paced game in which the enemy got the worst of it.

Do not dump, just pop

Now, a year later, DOOM is back. But this time you can visit Mars and Hell in virtual reality with DOOM VFR. Instead of a retelling of the adventure from the earlier DOOM games, DOOM VFR offers a new perspective on the events on Mars. Again the UAC is overwhelmed by hellish beings and you get the task to shoot all this scum to the hereafter.

But not before you take the lead at the beginning and your consciousness is uploaded to an artificial brain. This resurrection will give you a last chance to save the UAC facility on Mars from ruin. It soon becomes clear that the game should not have its story, because the plot is simply not present.

You never get to hear how your character is called and interaction with other people is not really there. The game simply gives you a reason to fight against demons and you have to grab them with both hands. Fortunately, the gameplay of DOOM VFR makes a lot of good soon after this disappointing first impression.

Choose the control that appeals to you

Because that id Software can make a good shooter, that becomes clear when you can actually shoot with lead. The game supports both the normal DualShock 4 controller, as well as the Move Controllers and the more recent Aim Controller. Each control method has its own way of playing, with all advantages and disadvantages. Although the buttons are easily accessible on the DualShock, you do not feel so sucked into the action as when you are popping with motion controls .

In addition, the Aim Controller is by far the coolest way to play, although changing weapons with this controller is a little awkward due to an unfortunate choice of buttons. Doom VFR is certainly not perfect in that respect, but that the game is very fat to play around, that is like a house above water.

In the game you use the well-known arsenal shooting rods. From a familiar laser gun to a brutal shotgun and rocket launcher, all your murder tools are present. The speed at which you have to use these guns is high, as with the original games, although the pace is a bit lower than with a non-VR game.

A bloody spectacle

To dodge all those enemies, you can roam freely while traversing the six-hour adventure that DOOM VFR offers you. You can also use a teleportation movement that takes you quickly from point A to point B. The nice thing about this is that you can easily disable your enemies with this move. Bring them out of balance and teleport them on top of them. An explosion follows and the blood splashes against the walls; again a demon less.

In any case DOOM VFR, certainly for a VR title, is not a punishment to watch. Although there are some pop-ups to be found here and there, the shooter looks pretty good in general and the gore is beautifully portrayed. People with a weak stomach must be careful, because DOOM VFR is only suitable for skilled shooters. Not only because of all the bloody spectacle, but also because of the rapid reactions that are constantly required of you.

Many people become nauseous when they have to move quickly in VR, something that is the case with RIGS, for example . So keep this in mind if you plan to enter Hell, otherwise you will come home from a cold funfair. You definitely have to get used to the way of driving in the beginning, so the first impression can be a bit disappointing.

Conclusion

But in that case, keep on playing, because if you have learned the tricks of the trade, you will only see how great DOOM is in VR. Admittedly, six hours is not very long and a little more content was not out of place, but those few hours are worth every minute of your time.

The action from the DOOM series has been nicely transferred to the world of virtual reality, with the well-known weapons and of course enemies. Graphically the title looks fine, with cool effects and enough variation within the environments to remain interesting. Although the control is not perfect, it does its job and with that DOOM VFR has a solid experience for every VR owner.

Pros

➕ Well-known action well transferred
➕ Looks great graphically
➕ Many ways to play

Cons

➖ Not every control method works equally well
➖ Relatively short
