Bayonetta 2 Switch Review - A "new" topper for the Switch

If someone is not welcome in both heaven and hell, then Bayonetta is. Not only has she proven with the previous Wii U version that she has a grind on the agenda of the universe, but in 2018 she does that little bit. Whether it is worth it again, you can read in the Bayonetta 2 Switch Review.

Where the first Bayonetta gamers "cautiously" acquainted themselves with a new beat 'em up franchise, the second part started as a blockbuster. The latter especially literally, because the cynical Umbran Witch beat everything short and small that came on her path. The problem for many lovers of the first meeting was that the dust had to be bitten with Bayonetta 2 as Wii U exclusive. This did not mean a game yet, as the game will be given a second life on the Switch from 16 February, bundled with the first part for a prize of around 60 euros.

Strong entry

For those who are not yet familiar with Bayonetta, the franchise can best be described as a brainchild of Darksiders and Devil may Cry. For example, all three games revolve around an incredibly strong character with supernatural powers that, through raging combos, tears apart numerous monsters and gets points for them. The big difference is that Bayonetta stands out above the quality of the other examples on many fronts. Especially part two on the Switch knows how to confirm that.

The story comes to splash the screen better than ever before. Cutscenes, alternating between real-time and a kind of comic style, are without a doubt spattering. In addition to the graphical quality, which has improved a lot and which you will soon read more about, there is the necessary humor and tension to keep you fascinated until the end. What an outcome that you can take the game with you, including all 16 original chapters!

Trusted quality

Just as the game again contains the well-known storyline, there are not that many other features that have changed. Everything that the Wii U version has in house can be found on the Switch to the same extent. Flashing fast fights, Rodin's hell shop and unique slow motion action called Witch Time. The little innovation does not matter, because just like a few years ago, the gameplay still earns a good rating.

Playing the twelve-hour singleplayer story throws generous portions of adrenalin in the round. There are more bosses than levels and the environments where you are now crosst through to get a ring. Platinum Games (ingame) literally put the world upside down to create a true masterpiece from.

Switch vs. Wii U

This brings you directly to the biggest improvement of the game compared to the Wii U version. The environments are even more impressive with a fixed 60 frames per second. A Switch game where so much happens on the screen without being a victim of framedrop, you have not seen before. You could not do that with the changing FPS of the Wii U as that platform had trouble keeping up with the fast action.

On both the big screen and handheld the game plays just as streamlined. There is a small difference in graphical quality, but that has to do with the loyalty to the 720p. If you play on a somewhat larger monitor, it looks almost the same as on the Wii U which is still best to handle. On the handheld mode, the game is even better and really starts to shine.

Still, the visual aspect is not the only improvement compared to the Wii U. The touch control has been thrown on the shovel and is doing well now. Swipe and tap at your feet while one after the other is being hacked by Bayonetta's iconic torture vessels. If this is not your thing, you can of course also use the traditional controls to get started where nothing can be blamed.

A gamble bold

Functions like Amiibo's and Tag Climax would be thoroughly tested. The Amiibo support ensures that you can collect rewards no less than 32 times a day by stopping a figure. In some cases you will unlock new costumes (hello Samus!) And you will receive mountains of ingame currency. In the absence of Amiibo, you can also unlock the packages in other ways.

Tag Climax, Bayonetta's online co-op mode, has also crept out and is just as entertaining as on the Wii U. It also seemed strong that beating waves with scam with another player while gambling a lot of ingame currencies could go wrong. Unfortunately, the servers are not yet online, so an NPC should prove to be a suitable comrade. Addition to the Switch version is that people can now also play Tag Climax locally, provided they both have their own Switch and copy of the game.

Conclusion

Whether the Switch version is better than the entrance on the Wii U? You get a full confirmation. Although there is not a huge difference, a number of quality of life improvements have been added. A stable 60 FPS while performing the most grotesque actions by swiping is particularly good.

Bayonetta 2 for the Switch did not disappoint us at all. Without exaggeration this is the most raw gameplay you can find on the small device. In fact, the game is as good as it is over-the-top! Dante (from Devil May Cry) can give up the courage, because the eyes are focused on Bayonetta 3.

Plus and negative points

➕ Timeless action
➕ Graphic later and stable
➕ Touch control
➖ Almost no new content

If it weren't for my already huge backlog, this would be at the top of my to-get list. Only played a bit of the first Bayonetta on 360, can't wait to get back into the franchise on Switch. Looking forward to Bayo 3 as well!
