A Love Letter to: The Old Hunters
Area 1
Bloodborne: The Old Hunters is a DLC done right. As in, perfectly. It may not be the biggest DLC with the most content or the best DLC of all time but it's a damn fine piece of content.
So, because of how much I love and adore this DLC, I can't talk about it in one go, it'll take way too long, so let's do it area by area; boss by boss.
The DLC starts in the Hunter's Nightmare, a remade, twisted version of the Cathedral Ward. This area is full of Hunters, beasts, dogs, crows and all sorts of messed up creatures. The beasts, as always, are fast paced and fun to dodge around and attack. The Townsfolk are the same, just a little slower. However, the Hunters scattered around are awesome. They're essentially small mini-bosses scattered everywhere. They require dodges, parrying and a good blend of offensive and defensive tactics to beat them down. Parrying is the best way to go but that requires perfect timing and such so some may find it easier to just dodge and attack when they can.
Much like the base game, this first area is beautifully interwoven with shortcuts, side paths and different levels and layers to give the area the sense of a living, breathing nightmare. This all leads up to the first boss; and arguably one of the best bosses in all of Soulsborne.

But it's also a masterfully done boss. Starting off as a fast paced and frantic fight against a beast, quick reactions and excellent dodges are required to stand a chance. Getting to greedy with hits can and will get you killed seconds. You have to always keep your guard up, bring your A-game when fighting this phase.
Then, we get phase two. Ludwig pulls out his sword, the Moonlight Greatsword and we get to fight a much more calm, collected and more telegraphed phase with slow heavy hits and stunning visual and musical ques. While, to me, this phase is easier, it's still no cake walk. If you don't keep that same level of concentration and skill as used in the first phase you will die. A lot. Especially when it comes to getting greedy with attacks. This is far more punishing in the second phase as the hits and attacks do far, FAR more damage.
This boss and this whole first area is, to me, the best part of the whole DLC. However, The Old Hunters never gets to a point where it feels like it's worse than this starting zone, it keeps the same level of quality through out the whole 4-5 hour experience, which many DLCs fail to do in such a well polished, consistent manner. However, Bloodborne accomplishes this with ease.
