Starbound Time! - From Snowy Mountain to Underwater Grand Library

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

The spot I'm standing at in the screenshot above looks pretty, right? It's a shame I don't have the screenshot when I cast a light to those ice crystals, they will emit pretty prismatic light to all direction.

There's a huge universe full of different type of stars filled with variety of type of biomes, and now I'm on a planet where winter never end.

I figured that winter never end in this planet. So I came here to... chill.

New mission: Find clues about fish society's ancient artifact, which is of course could be found under the ocean. But somehow I took my searching journey to some snowy mountains planet instead. Sometimes I don't know how my mind work.

But what's more surprising than that is that there's actually the fish society living on this snowy planet for some reason. And they seems to be living up here just fine. They even have arcade machine!

This fishy race is called Hylotl (I have no idea how to pronounce that), a semi-aquatic race which apparently once was a race that live on land just like the other races that eventually moved to aquatic environments just because they can.

In this game, the Hylotl are appear to be Japanese-themed society. Feudal Japanese to be precise. In feudal age when another empires are trying their best to make proper spear and chainmail, these people have arcade machine already. Nice. Not to mention the neon lights and the vending machine.

Hello, there.

Although there was no ancient artifact to be found, Esther Bright, the old lady who sent me out to this journey got enough clues to figure out where this artifact is. And it was fun to visit this cool settlement in the middle of this frozen land. And the sight of that black cat gave me some feels... for a reason.

With many different biomes, lots of loots, and cute monsters that can bring up fun fighting experience the game is so much fun to explore. However, questing in the game get repetitive too quickly. And that reduce the fun quite a bit that I'm only doing it when I'm looking for more crew members.

As far as I know there's not much variety of (side) quests. The ones I've found everytime are escort mission, items fetching, and getting rid of outlaws or monsters. The motive/the stories of the quests are pretty much the same, the difference is only on the items and the enemies.

Long story short, the artifact is being held by cultists in a big underwater Hylotl library, so big that it almost looked like a city. That buildings connector bridge make it look more like Rapture. Now that I discovered this, I realized that this is a sandbox game where you can build just about anything (within the game's capability, of course) in the variety of biomes to choose from, including under the ocean. So I can build an underwater city like Rapture and I wonder why I didn't think of this idea.

And it got more and more like Rapture when I got to the ruined part of the place. Flooded tunnel bridge, the way forward blocked, remember that scene? It really makes me want to rush to build my own underwater base... or settlement... or an entire city.

Finally, I've found a game where I could build Rapture. Or, something like Rapture. I'll build my own underwater utopia as soon as I finished the main storyline. Minus the drug addicts civil war, of course. I'm not comparing this game to BioShock, That sounds ridiculous when I put it like that. I just like to see this game have something similar to something I love most.

After defeating the cultists and other monsters, I finally found the boss battle room. Boss battle in Starbound is really fun, and the best part is you can do the battle again after without having to restart the story too.

The boss fight is not so hard, but still fun. The difficult part is only learning the movements pattern of the boss, and that need only one or two minutes until you know their moves. But some bosses change their attacking type after getting beaten to certain amount of HP. So you'll need to learn the new movements pattern again.

Plus, the weapons we got from the adventure are powerful enough to take out just about anything hostile in the game. But I don't know about the final boss, though--the giant tentacle--as I haven't reach that part.

The only thing that might be problematic about the weapons and combat is that the secondary skill of the weapons consumes stamina, a lot of stamina. It depletes so damn quickly from most weapons. But I don't see that as a flaw, but more like a challenge, which is fun for me.

Don't you want to know more about that cat on my head too?

The artifact... well, it looks nothing spectacular. No offense, Hylotl but I'm not a fan of ancient water balloon but atleast it will help to defeat Ruin (the giant tentacle, destroyer of galaxies). Although it led to something that don't appear so shiny, what matter is the journey, right? From pretty aurora(?) view on a mountain top, to awesome underwater library all with lots of loots along the way.

You had me sold as soon as I read this:

"I figured that winter never end in this planet. So I came here to... chill."

Haha! Now that's the kind of terrible pun I need in my life! :P

I like how you've done this post, breaking things down like that, it reminded me of the old gaming magazines I used to read as a kid.

And I like Starbound or, at least, I used to. I sank so many hours into it when it was still early in development that I think I ruined it for myself in the long run because I was bored of it by the time it actually came out.

Anyway, great post mate!

Nice to know the terrible pun have someone that find it punny :p
Alright I should stop hahah

Thanks for the kind words!
So that means this game was really fun even when it was in early development? Good news for me, I think, because I think I won't stop playing this game or get bored of it anytime soon because I just getting started on this version 1.3.3.

Yeah we should stop, you're right. These gaming puns are really Tekken their toll...

(I cheated and looked it up but couldn't resist :P).

Yeah mate it was pretty fun even early on. There was a lot of stuff missing compared to the game now obviously, but it was still a good time.
