Sea of Thieves' Design Director Explaining the Game's Progression System

"Not all treasure is silver and gold, mate."

-Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl)

When it's about pirates, for the movie we have Pirates of the Caribbean, for the anime we have One Piece, and for the video game there is Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Those are arguably the most popular and/or the best in pirate theme.

Now, for the video game while Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag have pretty much piracy stuff to enjoy in it, one more pirate game wouldn't hurt. Especially if it's (hopefully) a good pirate game.

Coming up next in "pirate themed game" category is Rare's Sea of Thieves, an action-adventure multiplayer game where to become a pirate legend is the goal. If you wonder how will you play in this game, Sea of Thieves' Design Director Mike Chapman have give you insight on the Sea of Thieves' progression in this video below.

So in short..
In Sea of Thieves you will embark on an adventure to be as much of a pirate as you want in the shared world, with gaining reputation as the foundation. Whether it's by just exploring the world or by running the quests, the player reputation is everything in this game.

The three factions quest givers may don't sound like they have tons of variations of activities, but they do sounds fun, and they feels there are enough of them when you could run across other pirates doing different activities from the other factions you don't aligned with, as the game aimed to be "..a world with very different activities where players and crews could seamlessly move between.". From catching chickens to solving riddles, I think there are enough activities for a starter.

What I find interesting the most is the defending your cargo from other pirates or trying to plunder theirs, while you will also have your hands busy minding your own ship to deal with the challenges like, as shown in the video, lining from a storm and the raising water level inside your ship. So other pirates is not the only threat, but also the nature.

"You can never be too sure who may join you and what their intentions might be." I like the sound of that. You see, in Pirates of the Caribbean movie what impress me the most is how the characters would fight each other, and then work together as a team the next, and then fight each other again until in the end everyone get their own fortune.

While, of course, I won't be expecting this game to be the same as Pirates of the Caribbean, I just think that by the sound of what Mr. Chapman said in the video, it would be freaking awesome if we could do what I just explained. What I'm thinking of is joining a crew and then commit mutiny. Woah..

What push the player the most to have a crew in this game (aside of the fact that you're a bloody pirate) is the voyage-sharing system, because other players may have access to the ones that you don't, and again it's based on the player's reputation in one of the three factions. That's how big the role of "reputation" in this game. You can even earn unique titles and show it off from questing for the three trading factions.

What I must remind you, readers, is that it is not my intention to compare this game to the other pirate themed titles I mentioned. So, apology if I sounded like I am comparing it.

Do you think this will be your go-to multiplayer open world game? Is this game will give you a fresh pirate gameplay? Is it going to be a Rare good game in its category? (See what I did there?) We'll find it out on 20 March 2018 on Xbox One and PC. Thanks for dropping by, matey!

Very excited for this game. Mainly for the multiplayer.
I doubt I'd play this game solo, but it looks like it'll be a really cool co-op/competitive hybrid.
Just wish we could have split-screen.

Yeah I think we won't get as much experience as playing with friends and join a crew.

I hadn't thought of playing Pirate Themed games before, but the gaming system looks fun, and might be the first "Pirate" themed game I try out. Thanks for the recommendation!

You're welcome! If the game will be exactly like that at launch I think it'll be fun, who knows what else they might add after to improve that progression system.
