My Gaming Time: Starbound - That Gurren Lagann Mech Is All I Need

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

"Everything's for sale, my friend. Everything. If I had a sister, I'd sell her in a second."

-Belethor (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim)

I've been playing Starbound again lately, I think this is my new favourite survival sandbox game. I love pretty much anything about this game, but there are also something that I think could be better. But still I enjoy playing Starbound a lot.

After I escaped from Earth, in my search for another Earth people who survived tentacle attack I came across an ancient gate that led me to a settlement called the Outpost. And there was a quest that makes me so excited, a quest where I had to test a mech prototype made by a penguin for some reason.

I will find you. And I will Giga Drill Break the sh*t outta this game

The body does look similar to Lagann (the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, if you haven't watched it yet right now you might wanna check it out if you like giant robot battle anime, if you watch anime too that is.)

That's when I got so excited in playing this game more, I was hoping that Lagann mech would be given to me after the test as the quest reward. But instead I got something different, which is kinda disappointing.

Fortunately the brass and black colour I give to it make it look more steampunk themed and pretty good to me, which is also what I want to get in this game, so that reduce my disappointment a bit. So to find that Lagann mech body is my new mission in this game..

Aside of the mech, I really like the monsters design in Starbound. They're unique and looks so cute I feel sorry that I had to kill them, for food, and because they attack me on sight. Apparently most of them don't behave as cute as they look.

About the thing I think could be better earlier was about the combat, or more precisely the monster's attacking move. Some of them that I met so far have different attack such as shooting poisonous thorn, diving maneuver (bird creatures), and spinning attack. But most of them just charging towards the player's character to deal damage. What I think of is maybe add some punching or biting move too instead of just charging in full speed towards me.

The big one is called Mandraflora and the little one is Bulbop. They are about to die.

So I stumbled upon a merchant on my adventure, a fellow glitch too. On top of a hill, with a cart. I wonder how the hell did he get his cart there, since both edges is way too steep.

Hmm.. this seems strange. Which is usually a good thing in games, right? A strange/unique NPC strangely standing around in places that he better not be, he must have some pretty good stuff to sell. Maybe tier 2 or 3 equipments!

Turns out he's not that good of a merchant. Eventhough I had the money I wouldn't buy that common sword and armour, I got something better than that at my disposal. But again, why are you even up here, dude..?

Yes, my armour is crap, I know.

I continued my journey until I found a village, an Avian village, plus a quest giver. Despite the detailed backstories of the side quests, like this one I get for example, is about an Avian wanted to craft something and she need someone to escort her to get the material, the way it delivered make it clear like, "This is an escort mission. Period." or "This is items fetching mission. Period.", you know what I mean?

So I accepted this avian's request and escort her far west to go to her friend's place and back in this village. Shooting and slashing every monsters in my path, and eat their meat by myself, and walking around with my mech while the escorted NPC had to walk by foot. I'm a man with manner indeed.

Aaaand I came across this guy again, on the same spot. With the same question, like, we've met each other yesterday, dude. And I'm pretty sure the items are the same as before too. So I'll pass, maybe next time when he got new and better items to sell.

A couple of (in game) hours later, the girl met her friend and got everything she need and we're ready to head back to the avian village. She wanted to craft something to impress someone.

The NPC is also not just following us in awkward silence, she have plenty of things to talk about and react to the things around her. One of the elements I really like about games... the characters, likeable characters that are not so stiff and static.

Speaking of characters, once again I met this sorry merchant, at the same spot again. But this time he use different dialogue to convince me to take a look at his wares, to buy them all.

So eventually I gave it a try, I looked at his wares expecting to see something different since it's been a while... Only to find the only different thing about his wares that they got dustier than the last time. Nice.

A few moment later a yellow exclamation mark appeared on his head, he got a quest for me. Finally he changed his mind from trying to sell me stuff I don't need to giving me a quest instead. When I played this I laughed when I saw his quest..

Seriously, dude? You better not faking this monster story to cover the truth that you need more stuff to sell.

I accepted his quest, of course, but had to head back to the village first to complete my current quest. I'm starting to feel sorry for that merchant, Sparkwall. He maybe even actually stuck on top of that hill but not telling me.

In the end of this journey, and the quest, the avian girl Zelehua decided to join my crew as an engineer. She's the first crew to ever join me. Of course I accept her as my crew, looking forward to see how that going and her funny chatter like that status. The journey to find Lagann became more exciting.

Great to see gaming posts here. So refreshing for Steemit.

There are also gamedevs sharing their project here on Steemit, and that makes gaming section cooler, in my opinion

It's amazing to see indie devs get some financial support in this way. If they play the system right and fairly, I can see entire games funded by Steemit blogging, Dtube, Zappl and Steepshot alone. Starting from an idea to pre-vis to development. No need to rely on Kickstarter or Patreon taking all the fees with no real return back to the fans. Fans get rewarded straight back in the comments section. What a win-win.

Can you share gaming profiles you recommend?

I didn't think it was that good until you describe it that way, Steemit is a great platform indeed. If only more indie devs know about Steemit including those that are famous already, not only could they get more famous and extra funds, but also a good thing for Steemit's #gaming section, in my opinion. Woah...

By gaming profiles you mean people here who post about gaming, yes?
