Risk of Rain Sequel Is Under Development in 3D, Will It Work?

"I promise that we’re doing all these things because we think it’ll make the coolest game."

Do you know Risk of Rain? In case you don't know about that game yet, Risk of Rain is one of the best indie pixel art games out there, like Terraria, Stardew Valley, Dead Cells and Starbound alike. They are similar in term of graphics style but is different in genre, Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements with procedurally generated world. It's a chaotic shoot 'em up with increasing difficulty the longer you progress. Or is it more like, underrated?

The developer Hopoo Games is taking a big leap for their next game, Risk of Rain 2. But we don't know if the leap is nicely forward or sadly backward, if that even make sense. After their success with Risk of Rain and Deadbolt, while the 2D pixel art graphics became one of the pro elements of their games and their biggest interest in game development style, in the second game Hopoo Games decided to make it 3D.

Posted on Hopoo Games' dev blog dubbed DevBlog #1 for Risk of Rain 2, they stated that they have been working on this project for 6 months now. And Risk of Rain 2 is their first 3D project that they seems to be so excited, it clearly seen in the dev blog. Reading that somehow makes me excited to make my own game too, but I'm a very slow learner so..

Anyway, Hopoo Games is a small developer team made up of two students from the University of Washington. But there are three people listed on the website for some reason.

Although it is stressed that the gifs you see is from a very very early development and thus the systems, artstyles, assets, or the design choices are not necesarrily going to translate to the final game, one thing that is likely certain is that Risk of Rain 2 is a sequel of the first one, not a remake.

So that means new monsters, new items, bosses, characters, etc. But for those who love the characters from Risk of Rain one, there's a chance some of them will be back in Risk of Rain 2, HAN-D, Bandit, and Comando are one of them and are still in development.

This project was not planned to be a 3D game at the beginning, it was 2D. But seeing all the fan art, and what Hopoo team wanted to make, which is to be able to display the items on the player's character's body, was too difficult to make in 2D. So they went to 2.5D, and because it was "almost" 3D, so they decided to go to completely 3D instead.

Many aspects of the game is still questionable and under planning, such as the aiming system, the camera perspective, the landscape, etc. But before you start to lose interest because that sounded like not promising, they always answer to all sorts of the fans' questions in the devblog, including about the aspects and features of the game. The fans are also as excited as Hopoo team for this 3D Risk of Rain 2.

Because of the small team, Hopoo team themselves still unsure when Risk of Rain 2 will be ready for release. Although the designer Paul Morse enthusiastically hope that it's ready to launch in 2018, they are still unsure because this is their first time making 3D game. Remember what the legend says and just stick to it..

"A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad."

-Shigeru Miyamoto (Creative Director of Nintendo)

Risk of Rain 2 is being developed with Unity 3D, and from one of the screenshot I think Hopoo Games also used Blender for the assets creation. Currently Hopoo Games' weakest spot in the development is the level design, and the designer is still learning and still have a lot to learn about 3D design. But, they are really sure that they could make this the coolest game. Stay determined, Hopoo Games!

Disappointing. I really liked ror, this looks like every unreal engine generic shooter out there, besides the cool art design. Maybe they will change their minds again.

Yes, maybe they will. Because this is still in early stages..
