10 Upcoming Indie Games of 2018 I Look Forward to

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

Out of the several upcoming AAA games of 2018, what are your most anticipated games? Have you ever thought you're.. kind of tired of AAA games and need some sweet indie games? If you have, these 10 indie games may interest you as much as I do.

These are my most anticipated indie games of 2018 that are already filtered from around 20 to 10 games. Maybe I'll post a part 2... maybe. Some of these don't have a clear release date yet, but they are planned to be released this year, hopefully no delays. Let's get down to it..

Frostpunk

Developer      : 11 Bit Studios
Publisher       : 11 Bit Studios
Platform(s)   : PC
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

Frostpunk.. as you can probably guessed from the title, it's either a steampunk or cyberpunk themed game. Well, you are correct, it's a steampunk themed game and that's why I look forward to this one. The game is a city builder game, but unlike the average 'colorful' city building game, the steampunk themed city builder Frostpunk set in a barren frozen land with survival as the main aspect.

Frostpunk is developed by 11 Bit Studio, the developer of This War of Mine. If you've played that grim game then you'll know that you'd likely face tough decision making and moral dilemma in this game.

Ooblets

Developer      : Glumberland
Publisher       : Double Fine Presents
Platform(s)   : PC, Xbox One
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

I wrote a post about this game a few months ago and when I found it, I really look forward to this one. Why? What's so good about this that I look forward to?

Imagine if Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing have a child, and then the cute little child idolize Pokémon. You got Ooblets. This game is a mix of those 3 games and you can see the things from those games in Ooblets, which is farming, town life, home decorating, and creature raising and battling, wrapped in its own style. If I remember correctly... the developer stated that this game is inspired by those 3 games.

Fimbul

Developer      : Zaxis
Publisher       : Zaxis
Platform(s)   : PC
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

The title is a little bit ambiguos and for LoTR fans the first thing that cross your mind probably that one of Azog's hunters that hunt Thorin and Company. So what is this?

Fimbul is a comic book action-adventure game set in the final winter before Ragnarök, the end of the world in Norse mythology. So yes, this is a Norse mythology themed game. You play as an old berserk who will travel to Jötunheim battling trolls and retrieve and artifact that probably could save Midgard. The synopsys may not sounds so interesting, but when I saw the gameplay I'm curious about this game.

I'm not sure how the combat will play out, the camera is sometimes in isometric view and other times it's in third person view. But the combat is something you'd get from a third person view and it doesn't change despite the changing perspective. As curious as it gets, the combat does looks good and promising.

Fe

Developer      : Zoink
Publisher       : EA
Platform(s)   : PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch
Release Date : 16 February 2018
Steam/
Official Page

For some of you who have heard about this one already, Fe may be the game you avoid for the sole reason that its publisher is the most lovely game studio we know, EA. So what thing is there to see pass through the "EA" in this game? Its unique gameplay.

The awkwardly named game, Fe, is a 'silent' game, as in there's no dialogue in the game (probably not entirely, though). You play as a cute little purple fox with the mission to stop the evil entities called the Silent Ones that threaten the forest... by singing. The forest will respond to the fox's song and that what's the player have to use as an advantage. As you progress you'll learn new songs from the forest' creatures that will grant new abilities.

You will have to find a way on your own as to how to progress through the game as there will be no set of objectives. I like the sound of that. The atmosphere also looks awesome, it's somewhat grim yet beautiful.

Pathologic 2

Developer      : Ice-Pick Lodge
Publisher       : tinyBuild
Platform(s)   : PC, PS4, Xbox One, Linux, Mac
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

From a Russian indie developer Ice-Pick Lodge, their new upcoming title Pathologic 2 is not a sequel, but a remake of the first game. What I look forward to from this game?

This game seems to be a great one, I heard people label this game to be "one of a kind" a lot. Pathologic is an open world survival horror RPG, and those genres combination is one of the reasons that caught my interest. Pathologic 2 is a dark themed game where we have to save the town's people from a plague eventhough we know that we cannot save everyone in the game, all the while trying to survive ourself by doing anything neccessary such as stealing, murder, begging, barter, etc.

Because I've never played the first one, now that it will have a remake I think it would be my postponed lucky day to play the improved version of the same good game they're talking about.

Pine

Developer      : Twirlbound
Publisher       : Twirlbound
Platform(s)   : PC
Release Date : November 2018
Steam/Official Page

The game I've been waiting for since last year. The game that promises that the game adapt to you by learning your play style. Your every actions will affect the game's world, including not doing anything.

In Pine, mankind don't control the world and the animals has evolved intelligence to the level where they are humanly intelligent. You'll play as a young man named Hue. One of the few humans remaining. So.. adapt how? The game will keep progressing whether or not you take part in it, such as there will be power shift, and certain group extinction, etc.

Vampyr

Developer      : DONTNOD Entertainment
Publisher       : Focus Home Interactive
Platform(s)   : PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Release Date : 5 June 2018
Steam/Official Page

Yes, it's a game about vampire. Why I look forward to this one? Will you be interested in this too?

You play as a savior of the people, but you are a vampire yourself--a newly turned into vampire Dr. Jonathan Reid. Set in 1918 London, the city is ravaged by a mysterious illnes and you, as a doctor, must find a cure while also prey to the people you're vowed to save. The game itself looks very promising, with a plus that I really like is the old timey London setting, and from the synopsys it looks like we're going to play as a "between good and evil" character, which means.. an antihero, the type of character I like more than a hero.

Forgotton Anne

Developer       : ThroughLine Games
Publisher        : Square Enix
Platform(s)    : PC, PS4, and Xbox One
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Site

Forgotton Anne is more like something to watch than to play, but if you can have a role in it then why not? It's a cinematic adventure game with light puzzle platforming, but still highly focused on the storytelling. What I saw first in this game is, again, the steampunk themed it has. And then, I heard this thought provoking line from the trailer "Do you know where things go when they are lost and forgotten?"

A world where everything that are lost and forgotten goes inhabited by Forgotlings, creatures that are forgotten objects longing to be remembered again. Sounds so melancholic, isn't it? Well, Anne is one of the two human beings in this world and they have to find a way home. So it could be that Anne and her father (probably her father) are somehow forgotten, completely forgotten that they ended up in the forgotten world. What kind of story and secrets to uncover behind all this melancholy is why I look forward for this game.

Heartbound

Developer      : Pirate Software
Publisher       : Pirate Software
Platform(s)   : PC, Mac, and Linux
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

The so called game like Undertale, one of my favorite games. Well, on the outside it does seems a bit like Undertale when I see the gameplay trailer. I don't know how much similarity this game has to Undertale, but I like what I see so this is one of my most anticipated game of 2018.

The 2D role-playing Heartbound is one of the games with hidden dark story. And the story itself sounds like my kind of thing, time travel. You play as a boy named Lore on a time travelling journey with his dog Baron. What makes me interested even more in this game is that it's built in a world that don't look so 'dark' while the truth is deep down, Heartbound's story is about sanity, depression, child abuse and such. I think that hidden true meaning is what make it similar to Undertale.

Praey for the Gods

Developer      : No Matter Studio
Publisher       : No Matter Studio
Platform(s)   : PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release Date : 2018
Steam/Official Page

This is also one of the games I've been waiting for since last year. What game is this? Praey for the Gods is a non-linear action survival game that put you into a dying world to discover the mystery of the never-ending winter, with Shadow of the Colossus-inspired combat gameplay. Sounds pretty good enough to you?

You play as a lone hero, as if the cold, the hunger, and the monsters is not hard enough to deal with already. Oh, and the monsters? Their design and size are gigantic enough to give you the similar mechanic experience to the old gem Shadow of the Colossus. The survival aspect is pretty intense as you'll have keep your belly full while also trying to stay warm. So yes, the cold will kill you, it wasn't a joke.

Thanks for stopping by, Steemian!

Gotta love the gaming industry of today. :) I haven't gotten bored of AAA games precisely because of all these indie titles which are generally way more interesting. Instead of playing a few indies in between AAA games I do the opposite. :P

Ever I since I played Ori and the Blind Forest when it first came to Xbox, I've fallen hard for metroidvanias.

Are you looking forward to any games in that genre?

I forgot to put this on this list--The Siege and the Sandfox. It's a metroidvania, but stealthy, and is being called that it invents a new genre; stealthvania. You might want to check that one out.

Another one is Heart Forth, Alicia. The art style is your average pretty pixel art, but there's something about the animation that keep my eyes on it. For a pixel art, it looks more.. fluid(?) than most pixel art styled games. I'm not sure how to describe it.

Both of these games are planned for 2018. There's actually one more but it isn't clear if it's a 2018 game, called Chasm. Maybe I'll make a part 2 of this post..

Perfect, I'll keep an eye out for those. Thx!

Frostpunk looks right up my alley, off to put it in my wish list.

Me too. 10/10 would like to make a character mentally broken again for killing other people several times XD

...
I'm a bad person.

Good person, survival of the city!
