Retro Review - Streets Of Rage

The genre Beat em Up is one of my favorite genres of video games, since our main mission in this type of games is to advance and defeat those enemies who have the audacity to confront us. Many games of this genre are currently recognized as the best in their genre and the best games of a generation and although many times the argument of these are very basic and in others they even lack arguments, the strong point of these titles is their gameplay and the mechanics of the characters that we have the opportunity to control.

The Retro Review is about a classic game of the genre Beat em Up: Streets of Rage.

The history of this game could not be simpler and at the same time very stereotyped, yet it is necessary to know the events of the universe that this game has created. In Streets of Rage we are in a decadent city that is prey to violence, robberies and any kind of bribery, all commanded by the main villain of this saga: Mr.X, what was previously a prosperous and peaceful city not it is not even the shadow of what it is today. The criminal Mr.X thanks to his union of criminals, they have under his power to this city, therefore the police of the locality does not face them for fear of the reprisals that they would take against them. However, a trio of former police officers, tired of being under the shadow of a criminal, decide for themselves to free their city from the power of M.rX and for them they will go through the streets giving kicks and blows to any enemy that runs into them their paths.

These three heroes are:

Adam Hunter: He's one of the ex-cops who's going to take justice into his own hands, he's a boxing expert.

Source

Axel Stone: His ability is to be an expert in martial arts.

Source

Blaze Fielding: As was very typical in this kind of games, Blaze being female is the fastest of the 3, however her blows have less impact.

After choosing our favorite character, our mission was to advance through each zone, defeat each enemy that came across us until we reached the end and find ourselves facing Mr.X.

Little can I say about the graphic aspect that can not be seen with the naked eye and is that Streets Of Rage has an excellent graphic section and, despite not having a quality superior to many games of the time, we must admit that even Nowadays, it is a game that has aged quite well compared to many games that came out the same year as this title.

The setting of Streets of Rage reminds me a lot of Robocop or Blade Runner, since this is a game that maintains a style similar to cyberpunk, where we can find neighborhoods, alleys and all that scenario that lends itself to distribute blows, where in many they can appreciate the chaos and destruction that is damaging the city. As for the characters, they do not stand out much in the graphic aspect, however the Sprites of the characters are well made and drawn, in the same way our main characters are very recognizable and their aspects fit perfectly with all the small plot that originates in this game, in addition to counting, as with the scenarios, a color palette that perhaps can be seen a little dark, but is appropriate for the type of game it is and especially for the game's plot, since it is not going to use a palette of very bright colors to represent a city that is submerged in chaos and violence.

For me, this is the best worked aspect of this whole game, as each Streets of Rage melody adequately represents what the game itself is: A game full of action from start to finish, where we have to go around hitting and kicked every enemy that has the audacity to face us. The soundtrack of Steet of Rage is one of those that always makes you want to listen to them again to remember those good moments you had when you played it.

This is the most basic aspect of Streets of Rage, since this is a game that does not bring new things compared to other games of the same genre. Street of Rage was released as a competition to other Beat em Up games, as is the famous "Final Fight" and despite not having the fame of the latter, Streets of Rage has a moderate recognition in the videogame industry.

This game has 3 playable characters, where each of them stands out for having certain skills different from their peers, therefore depending on our style of play, we will agree to play with one character or another.

As I said before our main characters are:

Source

Adam Hunter: As in any game of this genre there is always a character that plays the role of the tank, that is, that character that has the ability to withstand a greater number of blows and also that his blows are more powerful than their companions. This is the Street Of Rage tank, but as is customary in the characters that are characterized as tanks, they tend to be very slow, therefore they are prone to receive more hits as they do not have the speed to dodge everyone.

Source

Axel Stone: This is the most balanced character, that is, it does not have a very high damage level or a very high level of speed, but it is the most "normal", so to speak, of the group, it is the most balanced and normally it is the one selected by those people who play this game for the first time.

Source

Blaze Fielding: She is the only woman in the group and is characterized by having greater speed of movement, she is very quick both to dodge and attack, however her level of damage is lower than that of her companions, even though due to her great speed she is which I can generate better attack combos.

Streets of Rage is a very good game, highly recommended to spend a few hours fighting against hordes of enemies and thanks to its good music, creates a good environment that helps the game immersion, in this case, it helps to deliver better blows to our enemies. A highly recommended game.
