A trip back to 2003 in gaming history (Part 1)

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Shed a tear for the fate of the last lonely eagle - the last old-style Volkswagen Beetle rolls off its production line in Puebla, Mexico in 2003. While the brightest scientists from all around the world successfully finished sequencing 99% of the human genome, Arnie was elected as the governor of California, and again - this is 2003. Now apart from all that - let's see what was the world playing back then.

Before I carry on with this I'd like to note that it'd be really cool if you reading this would share your thoughts and opinions on the games I highlighted below as I (and probably most other people) am not well familiar with all of them and might have totally missed the awesomeness of some or even generally missed to mention some cool games released that year.

Some other years I already covered, be sure to open them up in a new tab while reading this one.

Having that out of the way, let's talk business!

SimCity 4

-1IxEFLsNq0.jpg

The fourth installment in the series, still developed by Maxis and published by EA. Sim City 4 introduces day and night cycles for the first time in the series. Despite being very demanding on your PC performance, the game was highly praised, won several awards and became one of the top 10 selling games of 2003.

Devil May Cry 2

Or as you may know it "Debiru Mei Kurai Tsu". The second installment appears quite different compared to the first one and was heavily criticized for that, especially for being way easier than the original title. Nevertheless - still a commercial success.
What do you think about the second DMC?

Unreal II: The Awakening

uZM7zVUGPv4.jpg

Initially released having only a single-player campaign, got an expansion featuring a multiplayer mode later. The multiplayer expansion featured only one mode similar to "Capture The Flag" which I think was just not enough, what do you think?

Command & Conquer: Generals

01MZzOODnBA.jpg

The seventh installment in the series. The game uses an extended version of Command & Conquer: Renegade's 3D engine. A sequel to Generals was in development, but was later repurposed to be a free-to-play title known as just "Command & Conquer". Even the f2p title was later cancelled by EA due to negative feedback during alpha testing. The "Generals" game took a different approach to many gameplay elements which a lot of series fans found disappointing, although I think it was quite fresh - what about you?

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb

fST9UnljRTw.jpg

An action-adventure game set in 1935 between the first and the second movie.

Praetorians

WpoKy4t4LXw.jpg

A real-time tactics game developed by Pyro Studios and published by Eidos Interactive. I did not play it and wouldn't have much to say here, would you have anything?

Master of Orion III

NljLjulexoA.jpg

The third title in the series. The game is actually a universe of its own and will simply not fit into a description such as this one. Great fun if you had the patience to get into all the small details.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc

tQF2znzgXHs.jpg

The third major installment in the Rayman series. The title took a more lighthearted approach compared to the earlier ones and features a good deal of self irony. By the end of March 2003 Rayman 3 sold over a million copies. Have you played the HD remastered one?

Line of Sight: Vietnam

SgctZMEwtlY.jpg

A Vietnam war themed FPS. Got anything to say here?

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield

DfUPG2SanvU.jpg

Like other games from the same series, this title is based on Tom Clancy's novel which goes by the same name. "Raven Shield" makes use of the Unreal Engine 2.0. I am not big R6 fan, so I will leave it to you...

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down

bra9Cex6VmU.jpg

The sixth game in the series. Black Hawk Down significantly differs from earlier games in the series - while others focus on long range combat, this one focuses on close range urban combat and has heavily scripted missions.

Vietcong

Gc05L0VxcZQ.jpg

A tactical FPS which is set during the Vietnam war in 1967. Haven't had a go with this one either, but I trust you might have.

1503 A.D.: The New World

QL3wFC6rvQc.jpg

Or as you may know it - Anno 1503, a sequel to Anno 1602 and a predecessor to Anno 1701.
In Germany the title went over 200k sales in under 2 weeks, becoming the country's fastest selling game of all time by November 2003. I personally find this to be a really delightful colony sim.

X2: Wolverine's Revenge

vZbzG3D48LE.jpg

The game was released to promote the new X-Men movie, yet didn't share the movie's story and adopted an original comic book story instead, written by Larry Hama. And just look at that Wolverine's face!

EVE Online

f0r8apQ0KAM.jpg

A truly massive multiplayer game developed and published by CCP games. I am sure there are some EVE players out there, so please share your thoughts with us as I haven't ever actually played it before. Just think about it - the game contains a total of 7,800 star systems that can be visited by players!

Rise of Nations

W0i8swnYGNM.jpg

An RTS who's lead designer was Brian Reynolds known for Civilization II and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

Enter the Matrix

r7WBNjHmrUA.jpg

The first game based on the Matrix movie series. The game's story is concurrent to the "Matrix reloaded" movie and features over an hour of original footage. The game sold a million copies in just eighteen days! I remember having loads of fun playing this and even re-playing some levels over and over again. I wouldn't mind giving it a go even now!

I know it's been a while (depending on how you see it) since the last post, but as you may suspect - 2003 will have much much more to offer than just the titles above, so say tuned for more!
