A trip back to 1991 in gaming history
Way before "your mom" jokes became popular and way before I was able to grow a beard we had the year 1991. While games released this year are considered game-changers by some and not really a big deal by others - there are in any case lots of awesome titles to cover here.
Before I carry on with this I'd like to note that it'd be really cool if you reading this would share your thoughts and opinions on the games I highlighted below as I (and probably most other people) am not well familiar with all of them and might have totally missed the awesomeness of some or even generally missed to mention some cool games released that year.

Having that out of the way let's get the wheels turning!
- Civilization
Right, 1991 gave birth to Sid Meier's most popular and ,to be fair quite a sophisticated gmeplay-wise franchise. I haven't been around to play the first one but the last Civilization game had me hooked up from the get-go. If you actually played the first one and have some thoughts to share, be absolutely sure to let me know in the comments.
- Railroad Tycoon
- Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards Re-Make (1987)
- Space Quest 1 Re-Make (1986)
Now supporting VGA graphics.
-Police Quest III: The Kindred
A brand new title released by Sierra On-Line that year.
- Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
A sequel to the clever and humorous "Monkey Island" quest released by LucasArts Entertainment.
- Wing Commander 2
A new "Wing Commander" game released by EA, they've really hit the sweet spot with their in-game mechanics here.
- Lemmings
The very first "Lemmings" game was a introduced in 1991. I guess mostly everyone has some warm memories related to these little suicidal mammals, but all jokes aside, this game does a good job challenging your logical thinking and the franchise in general has seen great development over time.
- Sonic the Hedgehog
One of the reasons I decided to bring up 1991 is the Sonic release by Sega. Released on the 23rd of June for Sega Genesis, this blue hedgehog had a colossal impact on the whole gaming industry and culture. He is also one of the first things that people think of hearing "Sega".
- Streets of Rage
Another awesome Sega title released that year.
- Super Mario World
On the 13th of August Nintendo releases "Super Mario World" and "F-Zero" which go along with their SNES console bundle.
- F-Zero
Released together with "Super Mario World" as a part of the SNES bundle.
That's about it for the noteworthy game titles I can name for 1991, but surely there are more and if there is something I missed, please let me and everyone know in the comments. If there will be a lot of suggestions i think I might do a "Part 2" for 1991, as I feel there might be a lot I missed.

The Monkey Island games will always hold a special place in my heart.
Dude, you have some classics here. Lemmings was stupid fun! Civilization is an all time favorite and classic. Wing Commander as well.
True that! Civilization is indeed a genius thing, although I had a really hard time figuring it out as a kid back then.
Civilization . I haven't played it yet. I just watch some video about it. And it look pretty amazing.
Try it out for sure, can't say for the earlier ones, but the last one is an absolute marvel.
I've played 1, 2, call to power (not sid miers), 3, missed 4 and 5, and have been playing 6 lately. 2 and 3 were my favorites so far. 6 just has WAY too much going on for my liking with all the culture and religion warfare aspects. So far, my MO has stayed the same- build as many cities as you can early on and then start concentrating on economic and military techs. Crank out a bunch of units, overwhelm the enemy and then just keep upgrading those units. I've had game plays on lower levels where I don't ever lose a single unit. You just march across the world with the same 15-20 units and crush the enemy. Once you get the jet bombers in 6, it's over for your rivals.
I haven't actually even played the 6th one but, i guess I should just to see how it's like, since i have a few friends that have a similar (to your) opinion on the latest one. But I've always found myself really fascinated by witty and somewhat tedious gamplay elements.
