Let's talk videogames | Happy birthday FPS daddy!

in #gaming6 years ago (edited)

Oh, happy day! Today I want you to join me in celebration, we will remember the history and influence of one of the most important games ever published EVER! One that has roots long in the 90's well, for kids it was a long time ago and it's birth echoed a million offsprings and is considered the father of modern FPS'. I can't believe it's been so long, I've been playing this game since I was 5 y/o... ow... that actually explains a lot of what's wrong with me...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DOOM!!! YOU BADASS SON OF A BITCH!!!

And what is a birthday party without music, let's hit it!
Yes, that's an actual Revenant playing the trumpet, for more information click here!

Doom is a reaaaally successful videogame franchise where you incarnate a nameless marine Bullshit, his name is doomguy eager to kill the hordes and hordes of demons in Mars, yeah because if you want to be metal AF you go to a red planet and become the worst nightmare of some satanic creatures, some call this a horror game because of this precisely, you're a horror from the poor inhabitants of hell.

The first DOOM game was developed by id Software and published in 1993 as a shareware which encouraged people to share the game with whoever they wanted, obviously, the game spread like wildfire from hell and it's estimated that it was played for more than 15 million people just 2 years after its release, the game was received with critical acclaim for its graphics innovations and 3d capabilities for that time obviously that age pretty well if you ask me, hell I still play this game! Doomguy is the best doombro ever!

One year from the successful release of Doom the guys from id Software gave the world a sequel called Doom II: Hell on Earth yeah more metal the gameplay and graphics in this game took a minor improvement but the biggest change was in the level design, the levels look amazing, bigger and more mazelike and the music was amazing as well as the previous game, fu of metal and rock influenses cemented the atmosphere of what a Doom game should look, feel and sound like! An immersive badass and hellish experience!

1996 and onwards Doom took a bit of decline in term of releases, no new title was added but instead some new maps, and expansion packs I totally forgot that was how we called DLC's before this whole microtransaction bullshit came but after that the project went into a kind of obscurity with a not so successful release for the N64, from there new games took over the doomclone niche, yeah that's how FPS' were called back in the day, that influential was Doom back in the day, every First Person Shooter was a doomclone.

If wasn't until 2004 that Doomguy grabbed a gun again in a total reboot, this game was uuuhh... eeehh... different, they took another approach with this release focusing on the popular horror shooter genre, obviously it didn't felt nor looked like a Doom game, the critiques were a mixed bag, some love it but most of the hardcore fans didn't feel comfortable, a lot of the elements that made it Doom were gone, no fast-paced music, dark environments with dimmed lighting and a story centered narrative that previous game ignored almost completely made this a unique entry on this emblematic franchise... I mean it wasn't bad but for long-term fans, it felt like a shotgun to the face!

And then we waited... And waited... And waited some more... The next year we waited as well... Then we got tired of waiting and went for a picknick... Then we waited again... Aaaaaand we FINALLY received news of a new Doom game to be released for 2016 called DOOM Yeah we returned in all caps just like DIO it was id software now under the supervision of Bethesda shivers took some up and down with the production of the game but finally they all said FUCK EVERYTHING WE'RE GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS!!! and they delivered with a fast-paced game full of action adrenaline and a soundtrack metal AF, I don't know any Doom fan that didn't get a little smile playing this... a lot of sadistic grins yeah BUT THOSE COUNT TOO!

For the future, it seems that we are to prepare for a sequel of the most recent reboot called Doom Eternal and if it's just like this one I can't wait, I can only say that Doom is a franchise that defined a genre, gave it a name before it had a name, revolutionized the way computers were used for gaming and were the platform for modders to start tweaking and changing games for fun, besides being metal AF of course I mean look at that, you're killing demons with your bare hands, in most games you run from them in this one the demons run from you!

Here's bonus track, well it's actually the whole OST but yo get what I mean

Good game franchise, but I had been playing only 3d and 4th parts : )

Those are pretty good games as well, the third one wasn't what everyone expected because the developers went for a horror genre feel but is not bad, just doesn't felt like the others, but the 4th one, oh man that was the homecoming everyone was waiting for, the music, the gameplay, the doomguy everything fell into place the right way!

Doom2 was easily the most important game of my teenager years. I must have spent hundreds of hours blasting demons and listening to The Offspring (back when they were awesome). The best day of my entire schooling career was when the IT guy hooked Doom2 to all the computers in the IT lab and we played on the LAN against each other... I absolutely dominated everyone, and it was the first time I had ever played a game with other people. So goddamn epic.

Holy shit! That pure epicness! I never played with other people in those days, it wans't untill I tried mods with all the zadromnum and zdoom stuff that I could massacre demons with friends, great bonding experience!

A worthy tribute to a worthy game in a worthy post; Perfect! Thanks so much @elfranz 😊

Amazing game, those of us in our 30’s probably all have stories of this game! We would sit in my friends basement for hours into the night, pitch black playing this game! Talk about added suspense!
It’s actually hilarious, I still hear some of the sound effects persist today in various ways like commercials and movies. One of my favorite is I think it’s the movie monsters inc, they have that iconic vertical door opening. I was like whaaat if only kids knew where that came from lol
I know I’ve heard the monster in the distance grunt as well somewhere else.
Ah thanks for the memories man! I need to download an emulator for it and revisit those old memories.

HOLY SHIT! Is totally true, I've never noticed that lol now I can't un-hear that

I highly recommend you to download Zandronum, it lets you play Doom with any .wad file you have, it even can run Brutal Doom which is a really cool mod that totally resembles the gameplay of modern 2016 Doom with old school graphics

Sounds awesome man, I wrote that down to get later!

Dyou know what man?, the longest game I played was counter strike, it was for one full week and then I left it, I dont know why I dont like to play video game or digital game, but I play game with the best in the jungle and I love it sooo muchh... :D, I wish I could play game with dinosourus especially the T-Rex (rexy perhaps) LOL..
