Wolfenstein II The New Colossus Review - The Diaries of Agent Silent Death
Wolfenstein II continues the adventure through DLC with three new characters. At the end of last year, we were presented with the adventures of Gunslinger Joe, an American Football player who did not want to submit to the Nazis. This resulted in a high price, but he retaliated in an amusing way. The next chapter in The Freedom Chronicles is of a different caliber, in this we assume the role of Jessica Valiant, also called Agent Silent Death. Her specialty? Stealth!
The missing stealth gameplay is back
Everyone who has played Wolfenstein: The New Order and who used the stealth gameplay more than once, will undoubtedly have missed it a bit in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Stealth's attention in this second part shifted slightly more to the hard action and although that was not a problem in itself, we can imagine that players in the first part missed this element a bit. Well, they are completely in their element in The Diaries of Agent Silent Death, since stealth is its main starting point.
The stealth gameplay in this episode is reflected in its standard resources. In this way she can go through all sorts of small shafts, because she is very agile, to surprise Nazis. Her standard weapon is a pistol with a silencer and as a secondary option she has casting blades. In short, the means of silently defeating enemies and, in addition, they are as good as inaudible when they are crouched through enemy territory. The stealth gameplay that was somewhat missed, now returns with this episode and that definitely tastes for more.
Looking for revenge
Jessica Valiant is a former secret agent and at the time she carried out missions with her husband. Her husband, however, has ensured that she could escape from a difficult situation, which he eventually had to pay with death. He was betrayed, imprisoned, tortured and killed. Jessica fled to Brazil to enjoy the peace and alcohol, until she suddenly got a document containing information about the three people who are responsible for the treachery and death of her husband. That gives her enough reason to return to occupied territory and call the perpetrators to account.
That will initially take you to a Gestapo office to eliminate the king of torture there. A bit later you walk around in Hollywood in the film studios to eliminate the traitor and finally you go behind the final responsible at an extraterrestrial location. Every location in this is a large level in itself, in which you have to find your way to your final destination. You can of course do this in the usual way just by storming two rifles at the Nazis, but using your stealth skills is more efficient.
Earlier we mentioned that the use of stealth tasted more. In addition, Jessica Valiant is an interesting and tough character, so we would like to see more of her. That all sounds very positive, but it has a negative undertone. If you use the stealth gameplay, then you go a little slower than usual and then the levels do not last much longer than half an hour each. If you start the confrontation head-on, it is possible to go through the three levels as a whole within an hour and that is rather short, is not it?
Combat Simulations
The adventure of Jessica is excellent and for so long it certainly takes fun. Still, it is unfortunate to see that you have been through this episode quite quickly, where you are working a little longer with Gunslinger Joe. Even if you want to collect all collectables in one playthrough, you are still very fast through this episode and that is a shame. But just like the previous expansion, this expansion also comes with three new Combat Simulations. Just like before, you will be dropped in part of a level - which is based on the mini-campaign - and in this you must shoot off Nazis as quickly and efficiently as possible.
At the end of the ride you get an assessment and the fun is of course in improving your own highscores. The pleasure of the Combat Simulations is mainly in the brutal action at a very high pace. Nowadays, Wolfenstein II is a shooter in which the pace is high, but that goes even faster in these simulations. You can adjust the challenge yourself, because it becomes even more challenging if you screw up the difficulty level. So you can make them crazy if you want to. Nonetheless, it concerns an addition of three new maps to a further known part of the game. It provides extra hours of gameplay fun, provided you like the Combat Simulations, of course.
Conclusion
The Diaries of Agent Silent Death are worthwhile if you have a Season Pass. I would also like to recommend purchasing separately, but for that the expansion is simply too limited. The three new Combat Simulations are a nice addition, the main part is of course the adventure of Jessica, but you are with at most an hour through it and that is rather short. That does not mean, however, that we would like to see more of her and the gameplay that goes with it. She is fascinating as a person and the gameplay is again as good as ever.
