The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia Preview - The darkness is coming

Bandai Namco is on the move with making games based on mangoes and anime's. One of their new projects is The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia. This game is exclusively for the PlayStation 4 in development and should not appear in too long a time. This title also belongs to the offensive of the Japanese publisher to conquer the Western market with Japanese games.

The darkness is coming

In The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia you get to deal with an evil that threatens to shrink the world in darkness. To prevent this, seven heroes, also called The Seven Deadly Sins, will have to pick up their weapons to fight the evil. These heroes, however, are not easy to find, because they have been defeated by the Holy Knights, because this group would have conspired to overthrow the kingdom. Because they are disbanded as a group of elite soldiers, they are everywhere and nowhere to be found. In the meantime - ten years after this event - the Holy Knights have seized power and of course the legitimate princess Elizabeth does not let that happen.

She goes in search of The Seven Deadly Sins to ask for help, so that the Holy Knights can be defeated and she can sit on her throne again. That is of course a best adventure and that you will now be able to experience for the first time on the PlayStation 4. Bandai Namco describes the game as an action oriented title in which direct combat is central and that is what we can actually try out. Nevertheless, the demo was very limited, so we had to do with what was playable and that was a tutorial and the Duel mode.

Various characters pass by

During the adventure you will experience, you will get different characters under the buttons. People familiar with the anime will be happy to hear that the playable characters include Meliodas, Elizabeth, Hawk, Jericho and Howzer. Every character has of course his own personality and more importantly, a unique fighting style which makes it worthwhile to alternate. What we actually tried was a little on the limited side, but it gave some impression of the gameplay. The Adventure mode is namely the most important, because in it you will experience the story.

Here you are confronted with various characters on your path that can help you, stand by and more, but of course you also encounter enemies. You're not very clumsy, because besides that you can tackle these enemies in a hack-and-slash way, you can also use special attacks that are just a bit more powerful. This way fighting does not take too much effort and the game takes you right at the start to get to know the gameplay. What particularly stood out was the particularly smooth gameplay and the sleek graphics, which remain close to the source material. It is colorful, varied and beautifully designed, both in environments where you can walk around freely, as well as in cut scenes.

Random fights

Much more than what we have described, Duel mode is in fact a stand-alone mode where you can place various characters opposite each other, to fight it out together. You choose a character that you want to battle with and also an opponent and then you have the choice of 16 different levels that are all quite large in scope, so you get plenty of room. Also the roster is not wrong, with no less than 25 characters.

Instead of a traditional fighter, this arcade Duel mode is fairly open. Not only because of the different levels, but also because you can move about freely and you do not have to follow a fixed pattern. That is more beneficial to the action-oriented hack-and-slash gameplay and that worked well during play. Incidentally, this mode has quite a few possibilities, because besides that you can play against the computer, you can also do this against a human opponent, both online and locally. What is very interesting here is that each character can choose three pieces of equipment that bring advantages to the game, see the depth in the gameplay.

For example, it is possible - depending on your unlocks - to carry 5% extra health, or 15% extra magic power. Or what about magic consumption that goes down by 10%, or 5% extra protection? They are all subtle pieces of equipment, but they can be decisive in exciting fights where life and death come. In battles with the computer, this is not so relevant, but if you go to work locally or online - possibly in a co-op battle - this is an important aspect. Of course you have to unlock it, so it pays to dive in this mode more often. In addition to the Adventure mode, this is more than just a nice addition, because there is quite a lot to look at.

Preliminary conclusion

The Seven Deadly Sins: Knights of Britannia is a typical piece of fan service, just like Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time. The only difference is that this game seems to be more accessible, even for people who are not familiar with the source material. It played in both modes - Adventure and Duel - very smoothly, it looked visually very tight and it seems to offer plenty of action with an interesting story. For fans that is fantastic, of course, but newcomers can also enjoy themselves here.
