The big lava monster is on your heels. Every inch of your TV is filled with lava and you as a miniscule creature have to make your way, but how?! By signing a way out! Welcome to the Max The Curse of Brotherhood review!
Run, jump and sign for your life. That is in a nutshell how the platform game Max The Curse of Brotherhood can be described. A happy adventure with a separate control that still stands the test of time. The game originally saw the light of day in 2013, as a download. And so many years later the cheerful looking game has now physically ended up in stores for 20 euros. A reasonable amount for a game that you can use for about six hours.
In the game you creep into the brave shoes of Max. As children often argue with each other, so he does. And when he curses and wants to leave his brother at the same time, that also happens. Swallowed up in another dimension, there is nothing else for Max than to put everything back on his brother.
The game takes you to 7 chapters, where your biggest friend is the so-called Magic Marker: a pencil with which Max can draw. Do not think immediately that you have a 'kiddie' game in mind, because Max The Cursed or Brotherhood is anything but a children's game. In fact, the further you get, the more challenging the puzzles and the more 'skills' you get. With that highlighter you can draw various objects through which you advance in a puzzling way.
Draw on it!
Are you stuck on the ground for a moment, but do you see something green above you? Check. With your marker pen you can draw a vine there, so that you can then climb up. In the beginning this seems easy, but soon you will discover that you have to draw several things and then connect points with each other. If Max The Curse of Brotherhood excels in something, it is in creativity. Somewhere it reminds a bit of Unravel , although that game came later.
The cool elements are absolutely the puzzles and the difficulty that always increases a little bit. At a certain point, you have to draw water to get past currents or freeze lava temporarily, so that you can continue via platforms. And even if you have solved the puzzle, timing is the magic word. Because without tight timing you will not be able to save it after about five hours of play. Fortunately, Max The Curse of Brotherhood knows enough save points , so do not worry. You can try again often enough.
Enchanting
And sometimes that is due to a curved steering. The drawing is a combination of the D-pad, thumb stick , R2 and the cross. And that is not the most obvious combination for many gamers to solve puzzles. Although you will find that you have this required combination quickly in the fingers, there are recurring pieces in the game where you are in a kind of rollercoaster and you have to act so quickly that the key combination you will ever work against.
At these points the game gets you from time to time the blood from under the fingers. While you have already forgotten that frustration when you are at the next checkpoint. In that respect, Max The Curse of Brotherhood knows how to enchant you. The game is challenging, beautiful, charming and fun to play. Beautiful? Yes, if you consider that the game has been going on for several years, it must be said that the game looks good on the PlayStation 4. The question is whether you should purchase a physical copy. That depends purely on your own needs.
