The .hack series is back in a new jacket. With .hack // GU Last Recode Bandai Namco brings back the three original games, Rebirth, Reminisce and Redemption, in one new bundle. In this collection, graphical improvements and a new game mode have been added alongside improved gameplay. The games are now out for the first time in Europe, because the original PlayStation 2 versions have never been released here. I myself have seen the anime of the series and was certainly curious what this game could bring me.

The internet is a dangerous place

We play as Haseo in the first game, called: Rebirth, in a universe where you can log in to The World R: 2. This is an online server where Haseo also logs in and starts his RPG adventure. However, the mysterious player Tri-Edge kills a friend of Haseo in-game, making her into a coma in real life. Haseo then does everything to find this strange PK (Player-Killer) and thus becomes a PKK (Player-Killer) with the name "The Terror of Death". However, Haseo loses all his skills and levels after he boldly enters into a fight with Tri-Edge. His character is reset and Haseo has to regain his levels in The World R: 2. Although Haseo in the beginning of the game is a dire jerk with the charms of a potato.

In the two successive games the focus is still on Haseo while he tries to unravel the mysteries of The World. In his quest he meets several characters. These characters each have their own background story that is concealed in mysteries. The unique characters make the red thread of the story very interesting and this is very well thought out. However, the cutscenes of the games in which you have no control over your characters can feel very long. Therefore, it sometimes feels like you are watching a movie. In addition to the three original stories from .hack, a fourth story, Reconnection, has been added in this collection. This is a never before seen story that takes place one year after the events of Redemption. In addition, a Cheat mode has also been added.

Everywhere combos

In the first instance, there seems to be not much depth in the gameplay of the battles in .hack // GU Last Recode. Fights seem to be easily achievable with spamming the attack button. Still, looks can be deceiving because once you have mastered the combat system, you can perform combo after combo. By figuring out attack patterns of enemies and timing your own attacks, you actually get the feeling that you determine the outcome of the fight. This depth within the gameplay is also entertaining to find out and does not feel forced.

Also the decoration of the menus that you navigate through Haseo is very well done. This is reminiscent of a real menu of an online game which serves as an extra immersion for .hack // GU Last Recode. The attention to detail is therefore certainly worth mentioning, although this is disappointing with the graphic aspect in this game. The original games have been released for the PlayStation 2 and that is still to be seen in this remake. That brings back the charm of the .hack series on one side, but it also distracts from the smoothed visuals in some moments. The inconsistency of this is very unfortunate and, in my opinion, could have been better elaborated.

Conclusion

.hack // GU Last Recode is absolutely interesting for players who are familiar with a game like World of Warcraft or people who have seen the anime Sword Art Online. In addition, this game also provides more than enough modes for the already known players of this series. However, the game does drop some stitches at a visual level. Yes, the game is original for the PlayStation 2, but the pixels of, for example, the Haseo tattoo's are still very visible. This very much distracts from the overall pixels that have been polished. In addition, the speed (especially in the cutscenes) of the story can be very slow and very frustrating for many players. Apart from this, Bandai Namco brings a good remake of an excellent JRPG with which every new and known player of the .hack series can be sweet for a long time.

The plus and minus points

✔ Good story
✔ Interesting characters
✔ A lot of content
✖ Long cut scenes
✖ Not the best visuals for a remake
