Fortnite Battle Royale will defeat PUBG - The battle is on in 2018

After seven years of development, that game is still not finished. The UI has improved considerably in the meantime, but the entire second half of the game is still not there, for example. After level 42 (out of 100) the planned missions are over. Obviously it is Early Access, but the planned release date is coming hard. So how has Fortnite become so cool?

Battle Royale

The answer is one of the bigger controversies of 2017. Fortnite developers Epic and People Can Fly have copied the popular game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) fairly flat and glued to Fortnite for free under the name Battle Royale. Not very fancy, but unfortunately business as usual in gamesland. Epic got a big hit in the media, but it was often forgotten that GTA Online also added a PUBG-mode with Motor Wars and for example Minecrafters already played PUBG-mods. Not to mention was the last game from the developer behind PUBG itself very 'inspired' by Diablo 3.

Anyway, the hype is loose and other announced Battle Royale-genre games fly all the headlines. And you are not there yet with copy work. Fortnites version of PUBG is smaller, faster and inherits the style and building techniques of Fortnite. Fortnite Battle Royale managed to collect millions of players in no time because it was free and appeared on the PUBG-less Xbox and PlayStations. The strongest asset has yet to come. Upon release, Fortnite Battle Royale is still an empty mirror image of PUBG, but experienced developer Epic is working hard behind the scenes.

Events, modes, patches, updates!

Epic starts right after the release of Battle Royale with her first Events in basic game Fortnite. In online games, it is fairly standard to organize events such as Easter and Christmas in the longer term, with all kinds of thematic cosmetic items to unlock. Fortnite already starts with Early Access and, in addition to all sorts of temporary new weapons, adds completely new game modes. They do this almost continuously every month, so suddenly there is a lot of variety in the endgame.

There was the Survival mode. Here you had to build a gigantic fort together with your team in a ten-minute time, and then stop at night against attacking zombies. This could be stretched to a marathon of 14 nights, equivalent to four full hours of grueling survival where players did not even have a screw left to make bullets.

Then there was an event in which, outside the game, you could prepare a minifort with limited materials (as if you were dealing with an old-fashioned bag of Lego). This was saved and then used in a survival mode with three other mini vortices against ever heavier waves of enemies. Then came another Halloween event with a completely new map and missions, now there is a Christmas event going on with an improved survival mode and it goes on and on.

50 vs 50

Epic has used a lot of manpower to keep Fortnite constantly fresh. More importantly, this is also skipping to Battle Royale. After the introduction of ranking, a cosmetic system and such basic necessities, the first Christmas event for Battle Royale is now underway - with the temporary introduction of a 50 vs. 50 mode, the best version in the Battle Royale genre so far. Building forts with a team of fifty people is chaotic, cool, fun and everything you expect.

We have already seen the coolest tactics pass by. Players without good weapons (in any random location) ram out huge forts during the big confrontation, where the players with good snipers and rocket launchers climb directly to the enemy fort, while the builders run back to bring down downed team members to life. awakening, while the troops sneak through the trees with good machine guns to bombard the enemy fort in the back. That is what you want in multiplayer!

That mode will disappear when you read this article, but we hope it will come back soon. That, and in combination with the production power of Epic (we already see the first traces of a focus on the characters in their production á la Overwatch), makes Fortnite Battle Royale an unexpectedly strong opponent for PUBG next year.

The two ruffs both boast with millions. Does PUBG have 25 million players? "Well we are 30!" Epic calls. Epic 1.5 million simultaneous players? "Well we 3 million!", PUBG Corporation calls out. Fact is, due to Epics closed system we can not control it. But it is clear: this is going to be the big battle of 2018.
