Cat Quest Review - Simplicity does not mean that the game is bad

Cat Quest is an endearing 2D rpg developed by The Gentlebros, the studio that also made Slashy Hero. The developers say that they are inspired by games like Skyrim, The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy and with that the title also has the necessary to make true. Fortunately for Cat Quest, it has nine lives for that.

Cat Quest is set in Felingard, a country with mighty mountains, huge lakes, deep forests, a decent cluster of cats... and dragons? The feline hero of this particular story happens to be a 'Dragonblood', a prophesied savior who will once and for all save Felingard from the dragons. But all he wants to do is save his sister who has been kidnapped by a deranged and generic villain named Drakoth. During the adventure to ride his sister, the hero helps various villagers with various problems, he makes dungeons and caves free of monsters, he collects many great 'loot' and he meets a variety of enemies.

This is a very simplified RPG, which contains the most basic elements: 'leveling', fetching skill points, upgrading weapons and armor, choosing 'classes'... a sort of. Look, all the classes such as 'mage', 'ranger', 'tank', 'rogue' and so on are tied to the clothing that your hero wears (certain pieces of clothing give bonuses and limitations for specific skills), so the hero can, for everything , play all classes yourself. This makes sense since our hero is an alone and does not add any companions to his 'party'.

Simplicity does not mean that the game is bad. Far from. There are many things in this game that work very well. Like the combat system, which is an absolute pleasure. Again it is simple, but efficient. Dodge with a cross, attack with square, use magical attacks with the shoulder buttons; it works perfectly! A combination of dodge, attack and magic is often required during most meetings; because enemies have an attack radius, next to a magical attack that follows a certain path, left or right, criss-cross in a circle. If you are unlucky, you will encounter an enemy who attacks all three sides, combined with different kinds of elementary magic. Try to avoid that!

As you discover new areas in Felingard, you will find temples where you can learn new skills and improve those you have mastered. That's fine, since you also hit new and more challenging enemies. The Gentlebros have succeeded in creating a good balance between new enemies, new skills and new equipment, which makes this very entertaining - and also very addictive. At the time of writing, our hero is level 47 and we have no plans to stop for the time being. Judging by the caves we have found we can easily continue playing until level 99...

One factor that contributes to this addictive effect are the 'lootbox'-like treasure chests that you find in caves and can buy in the store (with in-game currency, there are no real microtransactions). As Forrest Gump would say: "These boxes are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you get". These are completely random and you often end up with a weapon or armor. If that happens you improve that object that you already have it. This makes it somewhat more portable. This is really a stripped-down RPG, and there are no unnecessary extras here. However, The Gentlebros might have been slightly taken in here, as it would certainly be nice to have something like a log to keep track of all quests.

Although the game is simplified and offers few extras, it is a catchy title. Felingard is a very pleasant place (apart from a dragon here and there), our feline hero is incredibly cute and we have the urge to cuddle everyone we meet because they are so extraordinarily cuddly - even the enemies! We lost count of how many times we "ooohd" and "aaah'd" have let go and "OH MY GOD THAT'S AS ADVERSELF" have screamed when we found a new outfit for our cat... eh... we mean, if our hero attracted new sturdy armor.

This is, simply put, simply an entertaining and cuddly game, with a fun soundtrack, interesting story, and so many cat jokes that you can not resist being constantly chuckling while playing. That charm of the game more than compensates for the lack of depth, the 'grinding' and the somewhat repetitive nature of quests. Cat Quest is definitely worth spending a few hours on it. We think you will not regret it.

✔ Fun; entertaining; great combat system; cute characters; user-friendly menus.
✖ No logbook; can use more dialogue; a bit repetitive; shallow.

Thanks for reading, I hope you liked it!
