In today's Fun Facts we are going to learn some interesting things about our favorite wading birds the Flamingo!

Here we go!

1.) The bend in a flamingos leg is not a "knee". It is actually an ankle!

2.) Being a Flamingo parent means equal work for both mom and dad. During egg incubation, both parents will sit on the egg. When the chick hatches, both parents will also feed the baby. Parents are also monogamous!

3.) There are six different flamingo species but you really need to know your birds to tell them apart. They are greater, Chilean, lesser, Caribbean, Andean and puna.

4.) Flamingos eat with their heads upside down. They use their feet to stir up mud and then scoop with their curved bills. Catching algae and small crustaceans like shrimp. When their beak is upside down it acts as a strainer and lets the water out.

5.) The flight feathers of Flamingos are black but you only ever see them when their wings are opened.

6.) The carotenoid pigments in the algae and shrimp they eat is what gives them their pink color. Babies are born grey and take up to three years to develop their full plumage. The pinkest birds will have the highest status in the colony.

7.) A flock of flamingos is called a stand or a flamboyance.

Now that is a Fabulous Flamboyance of Flamingos!!!
