Taking it Down!

in #fun6 years ago

At our cabin in Oregon we often have to take down trees that are a fire hazard and this fir tree was dying from the top, too close to the cabin to let it fall on its own.

Sad to see it go, it used to be a beauty.

So I put on my safety gear, heavy gloves and boots, goggles,
and so forth, grab my trusty chainsaw, and pose for a photo! :-)
I've already taken down the lower branches so that
they won't smack me when the tree comes down.

Yes, I do the chainsaw work. Not because my husband can't but because I love it so much. And because I'm good at it. No false modesty here - I can point to where I want it to fall and rarely miss within an inch or so.

To make this happen, I carefully notch the trunk. First I cut a wedge on the side in the direction I want it to fall, then a straight cut on the opposite side. Here is the first cut for the wedge.

Apparently sticking my butt out is part of the process!

My husband caught the exact moment I cut through the trunk
and the tree started falling. I'm heading in the other direction!

Trimming the branches and cutting up the logs.
The branches will go to the burn pile, logs stacked for firewood.
One more tree to go and then a nice hot shower!

Hah hah, that gave me a good laugh. It looks so peaceful there. Seeing you cutting the trees reminded me of this commercial, although I know it isn't relevant to you and your husband personally as you said you enjoy the chainsaw work.

I know, I can't believe they made this a commercial either, but I had to laugh as it showed the boys relaxing while the women were working their tails off.

Do you leave the stump in the ground, or pull it out?

Wow, politically incorrect on so many levels! =-} Too funny.
Where I cut the trunk was for my convenience, it's hard to get a running start from a crouching position! Later I went back and cut the stump close to the ground.

You are my kind of woman @donna-metcalfe :) I curate for @asapers and I'm submitting this post to go in our READ me ASAP newsletter :) Stay tuned...

Wow, how nice of you!
Your comment reminds me of once when I was at the Home Depot, waiting for help in the lumber department. There were six other women waiting too and we started talking about our favorite power tools, comparing brands, which ones we hoped to own someday. The conversation got so lively that no one noticed when the clerk arrived! It was so great, women bonding over power tools! My sistahs!

hahaha that's a great story! I grew up on a farm with one sister and two brothers and there was no distinguishing between "girl" and "boy" work there. It was all 'grunt' work shared by all :)

Haha! Girl power is right!! I love it. Its sad to see a tree go but when its its life or the house, the house will always win!

Thank you for choosing me! My husband doesn't usually take photos but he got some really good ones of the sawdust flying and me in motion. He will be very pleased that his photos caught your attention!

I had known you liked the chainsaw, but this gave me a whole new perspective of your skill! I can honestly say I just learned a lot from this post about the downing of trees and a lot about you.

I do love my power tools! :-)
There are guys up here who are amazing to watch and I learned a lot from them. But the only time I get to practice is when we're up here. Let me know if you ever need a tree taken down!

Chic article. I learned a lot of interesting and cognitive. I'm screwed up with you, I'll be glad to reciprocal subscription))

Chick article? Chick power! I'd follow you except I don't understand your language. But thanks for your comment.

Best to get that dying tree down on your terms not Mother Nature's terms. She would likely have it fall after it is dark, when it is cold, and when there is snow on the ground, so good thing you chose the time, the place and the direction of fall.

Exactly!
It sounds like you know Mother Nature and her sense of humor!

Oh yes, and her terrible mischievous side I am very familiar with.

Sometimes it is sad to have to take out a tree.

Oh gosh I know what you mean! But thankfully I'm usually taking out trees that are already dead or dying. Still sad to see them go but I don't feel so much like a hit man. :-{
