Spinach, Apple and Chia Smoothie for Fruits And Veggies Monday Competition

I'm not a smoothie fan but I'm working on it :) I'd rather eat the ingredients separately but unfortunately had to realize I can't really eat as much green as I should. So ... here it is, my very first green smoothie, which is a Spinach, Apple and Chia Smoothie!

There are lots of recipes online but I thought I'd make one of my own, just use whatever I have but the most important is to use spinach and you'll see why if you scroll down. So here's what I used for one serving:

  • 4 spinach leaves,
  • 2 medium lettuce leaves,
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 big apple
  • 3 tablespoons of almond milk.

Place all the ingredients in a blender and process on high speed until smooth.

I'm very satisfied with it, it's not sour, nor bitter, it's actually sweet (because of the apple). I guess, I'll put the rest of the spinach leaves in the freezer and use it later for smoothies.

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea), spenót in Hungarian, spanac in Romanian, spinat in German, spinaci in Italian cis an excellent source of iron, contains an amount of iron attaining 21% of the Daily Value in a 100 g (3.5 oz) amount of raw spinach.

The other ingredient is lettuce (Lactuca sativa), saláta in Hungarian, salată in Romanian, gartensalat in German, laitue in French, lattuga in Italian, is an excellent source (20% of the Daily Value, DV, or higher) of vitamin K (97% DV) and vitamin A (21% DV) (table), with higher concentrations of the provitamin A compound, beta-carotene, found in darker green lettuces, such as Romaine. With the exception of the iceberg variety, lettuce is also a good source (10-19% DV) of folate and iron.

Looks like Chia seed (salvia hispanica) has become one of the most popular super foods in the health community. For me this is the first time I use chia seeds and I'm going to use it because chia seed is nutrient-dense and packs a punch of energy-boosting power and has a lot of health benefits.

I agree I get more satisfaction out of eating solid food than smoothies.

Yummm! The smoothie season started here too (it has to be warm enough for me to drink it... in winter is a no no). I love it with spinach or celery or cucumber as for veggies. And all kinds of fruits :D
Often I freeze the fruits (banana, pineapple, mango or berries) in chunks to make the smoothie even colder. Yummy!

Thanks Ewa!

I've tried a couple of different Spinach/fruit smoothies and liked how they are sweet too.

Heyyyy! You I have not seen for a long time ! How are you?

I'm doing good, how are you? I've been a little busy with life in general though, I've not been able to post daily like I was.

I am oke too, I think i am not steeming anymore like I was either, on the point that I started missing your post i changed your name in my head to deboralee !! and could not find you :-)

I think your profile picture change made me miss yours. Great photo by the way. :)

Lovely post @erikah, I'm delighted you're trying different ways to get more green goodness into you! I agree with @janine-ariane that it could do with more liquid, but juice isn't necessary, water will suffice and it won't 'water down' the flavour. (Plus chia can make you more dehydrated too so extra water is a good idea anyway). If you're finding these green veggie smoothies a bit on the savoury side, you can add some banana, mango, pineapple, etc to give it sweetness... why not! The way I make smoothies is the same way I make baby food... a good blend of tasty things to make it a delicious treat rather than a "gotta get this down me because it's good for me". For daily inspiration I definitely recommend @amy-goodrich as the smoothie master! And before long you'll find yourself waking up and looking forward to your green smoothie ;-)

I can see the thickness of my smoothie is a problem for people. I chose to use less liquid because I like it this way and having it more like a snack, not a drink. Also I'm having it because I like it, not because I have to. I have my 1.5 - 2 l water intake, so it's not a problem. Thank you for your support.

Oh dear Erikah I hope you do not feel offended by it? :-o One likes it like this the other like that, but I never heard something like you show, a smoothie, :-) I ould spread it on toast :-) or to dip with chili chips :-)

Simple and delicious! I think smoothies are a great way to pack in even more nutrition into your day, too. I love adding greens, celery, chia and flax, matcha, berries and other great "super" foods to boost my daily intake. :)

Oh ...WOW...i love the thickness of that smoothie that would go well spread on some cracker biscuits...lol :)

Finally, someone who likes my thick smoothie! Thanks my friend 😊

You made me hungry it looks like that avocado dip with mint flavor :)

hahahahahaha :-) like that I ould eat it, but when I think of smoothie I think on glasses and straws.

That is a realy thick looking smoothie :-o I would put more apple juice in it, and I would leave the salade out, because salade makes you sleepy! so better in the evening. We begin every morning with fresh from the cow milk, I know there are sounds that are against milk, but I love it, with coconut, hazel or almonds or cashew or brazilian nuts, and a banana. And seeds, sesam and or ghia, or cannabisseeds lineseed ... Afternoon they become fruits with cucumber... and honey! :-) I love to drink a smoothie.

It is thick because I'm having it as a snack, not a drink. By salade you mean lettuce? I don't think those two leaves would make a difference :)

yakkes a smoothie to eat? more like we call moes in English it sounds like moose :-) when we eat apple moose in Holland they eat in england apple sauce ! But with lumbs we call it compote. No I would not like it as a snack. :-)

Oh this is super delicious! I am like you, not into soothie, but will work on it...

Then I guess we are beginner smoothie buddies 😁

I love smoothies because you can cram a ton of your daily needs into one serving! I find myself craving them on the hottest days. Acai is a nice addition to make it a bit more of treat :)

that sounds nice but hard to find here in Belgium, do you have them in Hungary erikah?

I find it in the freezer section (not fresh), individually packaged for one serving. Makes smoothies easier, no need to add ice!

I will start to look a bit more around.
