Fresh, Organic Onions for FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY COMPETITION

Our dear friend @lenasveganliving is hosting the FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY COMPETITION, which is one of my favorite because I love fruits and vegetables as well. Today I brought you some onions from the garden. Fresh and organic of course.

The onion is an important ingredient, contributes savory flavor to our dishes without contributing significant caloric content. I would say there is no cooking without onions, not to mention that onions are needed for vegetable salads as well.

In this photo you can see the ones from the supermarket and below the home grown ones. Onions you can buy in the supermarkets are big or huge in some cases, round, almost perfect regarding their shape. The home grown ones are not so big, not so perfect, even ugly and deformed at times :)

Below I'm going to show you some photos from the garden I made the last couple of years during the onion season.

25th of June, 2017 - This is already grown, can be picked and eaten, however it's not ready yet to be stored for winter.

6sth of July, 2017 - Ready for consumption, still not ready to be stored for winter.

19th of July, 2017 - These are already cleaned and are drying during the day. This is just a part of the harvest, just the yellow ones, I guess it was three times this quantity we had last year. Did you know that yellow onions have the highest total flavonoid content? The flavonoid content of a yellow onion is 11 times higher than in white onions.

These photos were taken on the 12th of July, 2016. Red and yellow onions drying. I know, they are muddy, full of dirt but after a couple of days the external layer dries and it's pealed off.

The hardest part of the onion growing process is the planting, especially when we are talking about a large quantity. I'm doing that manually, alone every year :) I'm going to post about this once the gardening season starts. I'm going to document it with photos.

So it's not an easy job but it definitely worth it. This way there's onion for the whole family during winter times.

Thank you!

Wow that's a beautiful sight! Lots of hard work I'm sure. Can't wait to see when you get this year's crop going!

Thank you! Yes, it's hard work, you are right, but worth it at the end.
Keep an eye on my posts because I will be posting about gardening very often. 😃

Awesome! We're working on our garden, but always need more tips so I'll be keeping up with you. 😀

Wow! Great looking onions! We have only had good results with walking onions here.

Thank you!

Fantastic post @erikah! I love the harvest photos and all the nutritional information. I eat onions in practically every dish I make, they've got such a versatile flavour even though its strong, it goes with most things! Thanks for sharing this, resteemed!

Thank you so much for your help and support! I'm glad you like it, the 🌰is a very important vegetable, I like it too and as you said, it can be used for almost every dish.

I absolute love to see your homegrown onion my Dear, I can imagine how much work it takes. And by the way, thye are all beautiful. I look forward to see more of your gardening blogs.

By the way, I am an onion addict, I tell you my secret, but promise not to tell anyone, lol. I eat few slices of Vidalia onion for breakfast with avocado, tomato, cucumber and toast. My daughter thinks I am wired, lol. 🍒 🍌🍑🌿🍍🍓🍇

Thank you very much dear Lena 😊 I'm glad you like my contribution to your wonderful challenge!

Btw, you are not weird, onion is very healthy, so you just keep eating it! Unfortunately I can't really eat raw onion but I use it for cooking which is a must 😊🌰🍆🍅🍎🍑🍋🍊

I love your homegrown onions! They look pretty perfect to me! Might be because I grew up with a grandmother with a huge vegetable garden?

Thank you @pusteblume, I'm glad I could bring back some nice memories with my onions 😃

Your post has been featured in the first issue of the brand new Make It Healthy Project Magazine! Many thanks for sharing such a great post, it's invaluable to the Steemit community (and perhaps even the world!)

I'm speechless @woman-onthe-wing! I'm honored and very glad! I don't know how to thank you!!!
