Freewrite | Sweating or Laughter Pt. 3

The following text can be (and should be) read as a follow up for the Laughter storyline, born a couple of freewrites ago. I'm very fond of the main characters, and I'd love to develop them for you to know them as I do. In today's freewrite I introduce the guy actively to the plot.
Thump-thump-thump.
His footsteps were echoing through the lonely street as he ran. One foot in front of the other. One thought on top of the rest. He missed her.
Going for runs wasn't like him at all. At least not without a purpose. These long, tiring getaways were meant to wash out the guilt and pass out in bed.
He took a detour from the asphalt to a nearby road to his left. Running on grass allowed him to overlap his memories with the terrain beneath the shoes.
He missed her, yet he couldn't go back to her. She'd say that she understood, but the truth was awful and different. Still, his heart ached deeply for her.
Irrepressible tears streamed down his face and blended with the profuse sweating. The dying hour of the day had already started chasing him, so he picked up the pace.
