Heat and Tension on the Grapevine
The drive-it-yourself moving truck stalled on the Grapevine, the mountain pass stopping the San Joaquin from spilling into Los Angeles. Sweat rolled down the backs of the three passengers resigned to suffer the heat. The truck lacked air conditioning, so there was no need to complain. The truck belched through the stall as the driver pushed into the lowest gear and rolled at a burro's pace as a parade of cars followed. A single horn, then others, squaked displeasure at the lack of speed. The driver aimed the truck for a turnout, wiped his face, and waved the parade around.

Hmm, this is the second freewrite I've read today that refers to a mountain pass in California called The Grapevine! Now I want to go see it for myself some day! (Preferably not in a semi truck.)
It remains iconic in my memory because of a trip we took in the 1970s over the pass in a U-Haul truck with no air conditioning. It was so hot. It's on the I-5 separating the San Joaquin from the Los Angeles basin.
Indeed, I'd never heard of this pass thing until today. sounds interesting, though dangerous.

It's the major pass between the San Joaquin and the Los Angeles basin. When I was a kid we took a U-Haul over the pass and we had no air conditioning. It was so hot.
