Madi's Garden

in #freewrite5 years ago (edited)

She sat quietly in the corner, a small piece of fabric poised in her right hand, needle and thread in her left hand. With deft fingers she led her needle to make delicate stitches forming elaborate patterns of roses and vines. Periodically she lifted the fabric to study the pattern, smiling imperceptibly as she studied the growing garden at her fingertips.

Within her mind a sweet song played. Her vision filled with the memory of that paradise and the soft whisper of water in the nearby brook. As she strolled through her sanctuary birds trilled in the trees and sun filtered down through leaves sploching the ground rustling with chipmunk and squirel foraging food.

They rushed for cover as she neared and she drifted in a dreamlike state.
The needle flew as she stayed long in that place and felt the magic. Her path took her to the brook where fish swam lazily in the sun. Occasionally a fish leaped to catch it's meal and sunk back into the water.

He was here waiting for her and the needle stilled at the next stitch. His smile warmed her and he moved toward her, hands extended. Her feet moved faster to meet him. Twenty-five years since the horrible accident took him from her. His body still on the road and his warm eyes forever closed.

He was there at the garden
Every time she came, reminding her that he loved her. The beautiful art lined the walls of her little room and made their way into the hands of nurses and residents of the modest nursing home she lived in.

"Madi, it's time to rest dear," a young nurse cajoled."Let me see your garden." The old woman woke from her trance and lifted the embroidered piece with a smile and allowed the girl to lead her to her room once more.

Lyrical, colorful, vivid, beautiful - and poignant! - I thought she was seeing his ghost and ready to die herself, but then the nurse... one of these days she'll be reunited with her lost love. Maybe when the embroidery is finished.

No need to upvote - a comment is golden! I've given up trying to upvote every comment I receive. Not enough steempower for that. I wish we could do the "Like" that Facebook and Twitter allow without penalizing a wallet.

Me too! ❤
