A Mismanaged Life - A Five Minute Freewrite
A Mismanaged Life
He found her weeping in his father's office, an empty drink in one hand loosely draped around its intricate decorative etched glass.
"Mom?....."
He walked closer and touched her gently on the shoulder.
She slowly lifted her head from the ledger.
"Mom, you should get some rest."
Over her shoulder he saw the red numbers glaring up from the ledger like an insidious accusation. Debt.
She shook her head slowly left, right, left. Her shoulders stopped trembling. Ice slowly melted in the glass and she sighed heavily.
Lena slid the chair back and rose, putting a hand on the desk to steady herself. Her gray streaked auburn hair fell in a confused tangle around her face.
"We can't pay off all these loans, Marc. Your Dad wasn't paying any of our creditors."
"We'll figure it out, Mom."
Lena lurched toward the door, slippered feet scraping, brushing wood floors with a swish, swish sound.
"you're a fool, Marc. Just like your father. Selfish son-of-a-bitch."
"Mom!"
"Shut up, Marc. I'm done covering his sins for him."
"God, Mom, what has gotten into you?"
Lena stopped at the door and stared hard into her son's unforgiving blue eyes.
"Maybe you should ask your step-sister, Marc."

This story is quite different from your previous one, but it leaves me with just as many questions! Glad you are feeling well enough to write!
Thank you for reading! I go through some real energy dips in this recoup time, so I feel accomplished when I can read or write.
