5 Minute Freewrite (single prompt option): I saw a wild pig running down the street

I saw a wild pig running down the street and it reminded me of the time I saw a bear cub climbing the ivy on the freeway overpass. I wonder where these wild animals are coming from? As the city encroaches further and further into the wilderness, so the wilderness encroaches further and further into the city. Well, if that isn't the most human-centric view to have on a thing, I don't know what is, but what can I say? I'm human, after all. I watched the wild pig trot down the middle of the street, cars slowing and honking and passers-by in the crosswalk dashing away and climbing up the street signs, as if that could save them from the tusks of a wild pig, as if their slippery hands could keep hold of the pole long enough not to be gored. More likely they would slip and fall straight onto the tusk and gore themselves. I watched with dispassionate interest. I'm not one to run into the street to try to save a wild pig or a domesticated human. I have my window between myself and the world, and my tea to keep me calm. In any case, the pig got hit by a car before it had a chance to gore any child, and I felt a slight sense of relief. Fragile and annoying they may be, but no one wants to see a child gored in the street. The wild pig did cause a bit of damage to the car, though, so I'm afraid it was a bad news story for humans and the wild alike.

Sort:

It would be great if more care was taken to have human developments not make such a detrimental impact on the wildlife. Then again, I suppose any sort of development will have such an effect. It's sad that the pig died in such an awful way, though I'm glad no humans were gored.

I call it an emotional freewrite , we really are encroaching the woods and capturing animals home . I agree with the development but it should be a sustainable one , no creatures should be harmed .

Thanks for the witness vote!!!

Your piece made me thought of those studio Ghibli movies (Nausicaa, Pom Poko, Mononoke ...). Why can't we live in equilibrium with the wonderful nature we have around. As you say, we are too human centric.
