5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Surprise coming for you!
Karen stood in the mudroom of her tiny New England home, melting snow pooling around her boots as she stared at the box sitting on the worn wooden floor. It was nearly tall enough to reach her knee and was neatly wrapped in soft blue paper. It was even topped with a pretty, satin bow. She shivered slightly as she recalled the words her client had used not thirty minutes ago.
“Is surprise coming for you! Gratefully.”
She knew her client had been pleased with her work, he had said so many times, but she still felt a growing fear in the pit of her stomach when she remembered that one word. Surprise. With beings from the Otherworld, a surprise, even a well intentioned one, could prove deadly.
And as she watched the box, weighing her options, she swore she saw it move. Breathe.
“What has he sent me?” she breathed, eyes wide and pulse racing.
The box growled.
