5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Snake
"The name's Vincent, by the way," the man said, leading the couple to one of the tunnels on the opposite side of the room. "I'm one 'o the ones who started this little slice of paradise."
"I'm Serenity, and this is my husband Justin."
"A pleasure," he smiled. "Todd'll be happy to have you two aboard. He's been wantin' t' improve the greenhouse for awhile now, but no one's got the experience for it. Now we just might improve our crops and have room to take in a few more survivors."
As they entered the tunnel, the smell of food hit their noses full-force and Serenity desperately wanted to run to find it. She knew it would be foolish to give in to the impulse, not to mention rude, so she did her best to focus on her surroundings.
Electric lights lined the tunnel and bathed the stone walls in an icy, white glow. LED lights, no doubt. Wires snaked along the floor and eventually joined to form a large bundle bound with plastic ties. The bundle continued down the tunnel and around the corner, out of sight.
"Here we are," Vincent said, ushering Serenity and Justin into a small room. He waved a hand at the man standing near the cooking area. "Hey Elias, get these two a couple of plates."
The cook nodded and began to gather plates, utencils, and food while Serenity and Justin settled at one of the worn picnic tables that lined the far wall.
"You two picked a good day t' wander down here," Vincent grinned, sitting at a table next to them. "A snake got into the animal pens an' created a bit of a fuss yesterday. Some of the chickens got under the cows' feet an' now--"
"I hope that you are hungry," interrupted Elias, placing two large plates of food in front Serenity and Justin. "I have made much today."
