Speedy Dog to The Resue
Source
I’ve never seen one Prairie Dog much less a hill of prairie dogs. but we have a similar critter here called a ground hog.
I guess they are called prairie dogs because they live on the prairies and have a dog-love bark.
From the photos I’ve seen of the prairie dog, I think they would make a nice pet. They remind me of a squirrel with a fat suit on. Maybe more like the ground hog.
I love the prairie dogs greet each other by kissing...Yep! Right on the smacker.
Looking at a photo of these prairie dogs reminds me of the time my mother was hanging clothes out on the outside line. At the time my parents had a lovely collie dog called Speedy. Speedy, now about fifteen years old, was very protective of Mother.
Mother hung the first wet basket of clothes on the line without any incidents. While she was taking the second load out to be hung on the line, she let out a bloodcurdling scream and hollered for my father,
”Ralph, come quick there’s something out here under the clothesline!”
Before anyone could reach Mother to see what frightened her, Speedy lived up to his name. He ran to Mother and in a flash looked down at a big brown furry rodent. Before you could say,
’Hill of Prairie Dogs.”
Speedy grabbed the ground hog by the throat and shook it to death.
...end of freewrite. Prompt: hill of prairie dogs.
Here’s a photo of a ground hog/woodchuck. They are a few pounds bigger than a prairie dog but similar in appearance and habits. Everyone felt bad Speedy had killed the ground hog as it would have scamped off without hurting my mother.
Groundhogs are part of the #wildlife here on P.E.I., Canada.

Well, you aren't missing just too awful much for having not seen a hill of Prarie Dogs.
We have them here in Arizona, and a smaller cousin that is a ground squirrel that is Sam's most esteemed delicacy on the planet. Not that he catches one very often (he has two for his career) but he digs for them like crazy. It's good exercise for Sam and gives the squirrels something to do in the meantime.
I have a story involving Prairie Dogs and the reintroduction of the Black Footed Ferret back into the wild (In 1973 there were thought to be 0 BF Ferrets left in the wild world. A very small but important population was found near Seligman, AZ and used to help the breeding program for the ferrets).
It's a great freewrite, and a nice tie in with the 'chuck' (we'd call it a rock chuck).
I will try again to give you a !COFFEEA. @c0ff33a has mined COFFEEA tokens.
Thanks @bigtom13! Sam is a smart dog knowing the ground squirrel is in the holes he digs.. I’m glad the black-footed ferret has survived.

My goodness, you call them prairie dogs and over here we call them "Dassies" in the local Afrikaans language and "Rock Hyrax" in English.
Great to see that you also have them.
Blessings!
They are cute little critters, Stephen. I’m glad you have them too. Blessings
I haven't seen any down here in the Cape Lady Jo, but up north we used to feed them in the wild.
Blessings!
Groundhogs are a part of my wildlife sanctuary too. I think they are cute, and they give my dachshund something to get excited about.
I am loving your freewrites! Speedy sounds like an excellent guard dog.
Thanks @owasco! Appreciated. 💕 Yes, your dachshund would love barking at the groundhogs. Speedy was an excellent dog and normally gentle. He lived to be 16 then my parents got a German Shepard . He was an excellent guard dog and didn’t like many people.
Enjoy a !COFFEEA

Why thank you. I didn't know that was a thing, but I appreciate it nonetheless.
Great story, very funny!
Thanks Keith. I’m happy to give you a smile. 😊

Well, it was a little sad for the groundhog... thanks for the coffee :-) I've been trying to figure out Steemengine but it baffles me.
I have won, air dropped or been given some different crypto currency on steem-engine.com.
I go in and look at my wallet there but haven’t done anything with any except try to give some away as thanks.
Did you stake the palnet airdrop?
Nope, I didn't understand what it was at the time. I will be staking ccc if I get some :-)
I’m a lot in the dark too Keith so hope I can help a little. Palnet gave me 262 tokens. Check if you have them in your wallet at steem-engine. There is a lock to the right of the page across from palnet. Click on that and then a form will come up that says stake. Follow those instructions and stake the 262. I heard if we didn’t stake that amt we would lose it. We use it on palnet to have VP.
I got them but didn't stake them. I didn't understand what it was, I spent it. 90% I spent on women, wine and song. The other 10% I just flat-out wasted.
Haha. Keith. As long as you enjoyed it, it was well used. I hope that woman was Kathy you spent it on. 😊

Cute little creatures, they look like rock rabbits or what are called "dassies" here in South Africa. Hyrax is another name that comes to mind.
Thanks for dropping by with an upvote and comment, @julianhorack.
Stephen @papilloncharity mentioned you had a similar critter. I checked out the dassies and saw how much they looked like the prairie dogs except the dassies have bigger ears. They are cute.
Aha, similar creatures but different.
Great free write! One this seems to be the consensus: these guys are cute!! I will observe to see if I notice them kissing when they greet each others. That just adds a whole new level of cute! In the praries we call these rodants gophers. They are everywhere! I've had great luck "talking" to them about boundaries. To help keep them out of my flower/ veggie pots pots. But, my neighbors were not so lucky. They can wreck plants with their digging. They also nibbled on some rubber utensils i left on my doorstep (in a bag) for someone to pick-up. Racially little guys!! Haha cute topic. I enjoy watching these critters so much. With their whippy little tale, cute faces and fat bellies!!
Thanks @yogajill. Nice of you to pop by. Gophers eh? They are too cute to be mad at them for digging . 😊 I have a skunk and raccoon that digs around the lawn, leaving sods overturned, looking for grubs.
