The House's library was packed with people, not to mention animals. Everyone stirred nervously, with worried expressions painted on their faces. @whatisnew walked up and down the shelves, her shelves, her tail bristling, with the tip jerky like a mad question mark. She had to find that book, she was sure she had put it on the third shelf of the bookcase on the left, between the Mad Arab Poems and the Steemhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but those damned purple squirrels sometimes moved books to hide behind them their supplies of tripnuts and funacorns... here it is, out of place, leaning on the side of a copy of the Declaration of Indesteemdence! The big cat picked it up with the mouth, testily but gently. With a leap so graceful that the top hat on her head didn’t even wobble, she deposited the tome on a low table, next to a reading lamp.

As soon as @mariannewest entered the hall, silence fell and the bystanders moved instinctively to make space in the center. Even @deaconlee, who had just finished informing the others, with military precision, of the danger of the Spirit Dust Bowl, stepped aside. The Goddess of the Prompt took the book deposited on the table by @whatisnew, opened it to the point where there was a sign, spread the other arm in a gesture amplified by the wide sleeve of the dress and paraphrased the text aloud:

"The Spirit Dust Bowl is not a normal storm, so we can’t protect ourselves in a normal way. It is human beings who created it. Every day, with the distraction, the tasks of a life lived in a non-natural way, with forced rhythms, in repetitive activities that mortify the ingenuity and the promptness of spirit, a small part of the soul crumbles and becomes dust. Fatigue and inhumanity lull the mind, which stops inventing, dreaming and even observing the world with curiosity, trying to develop an original thought."

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” @f3nix commented softly in the ear of @marcoriccardi, who nodded shaking his scarlet hair crest.

The Goddes closed the book suddenly and stared at the faces of those present. "But we are not ordinary people, we are the Old Steemians, and our minds can’t easily be turned off. We will fight the Spirit Dust Bowl with our imagination, doing everyone what they do best."

Silence descended into the library, as if everyone were completely savoring those inspirational words. The House creaked slightly beneath the gusts of wind laden with gray dust, which were beginning to attack her.

Then, @snook let out a low "Woot!" and immediately a liberating applause broke out, with laughs, whistles and acclamations.
@mariannewest enjoyed the acclamation, then nodded in agreement to the Oldsteemian’s defense force officer, @deaconlee, who took command of the operations:

"Our Goddess will be at the center, declaiming the best of our freewriters and providing new prompts. @whatisnew, with your agility and your knowledge of the library, you will have to bring them the right volumes from which she can take a cue. The others will arrange themselves in a round. Round is a shape that amplifies our creative power, because mental energies flow from one to another and everyone can keep themselves in visual and spiritual contact. "

"The brain is no gain without grain!" @improv exclaimed trying to lighten the atmosphere with a pun.

"I thought of that too," replied @deaconlee. "I present a new entry into the House: @metzli."

A young brunette woman, with a cascade of curly hair, stepped forward, brandishing a wooden spoon like a scepter. She had remained silent in the doorway since a longtime, but in the excitement no one had realized it.

"I saw that you got a well equipped and efficient kitchen, here! While you’re engaged in creative effort, I will prepare you a sweet and sour fantasy salad and nibbles of deepness, accompanied by cheerful rice. To quench your thirst, juice of wit and common sense ".

"Common sense is sensational" approved @improv.

At those words, the general mood was skyrocketing. @metzli was greeted enthusiastically, as was her menu.

Everyone took their positions. A strange and memorable battle was about to begin.

Le Storie della SteemHome: La Spirit Dust Bowl – parte 2

La biblioteca della Casa era gremita di persone, per non parlare degli animali. Tutti si agitavano nervosamente, con espressioni preoccupate dipinte sui volti. @whatisnew camminava su e giù per gli scaffali, i suoi scaffali, con la coda irta, dalla punta che si muoveva a scatti come un punto interrogativo impazzito. Doveva trovare quel libro, era sicuro di averlo messo nel terzo ripiano della libreria a sinistra, tra le Poesie dell’Arabo Pazzo e la Guida Galattica per Autosteemiani, ma quei maledetti scoiattoli viola, a volte, spostavano i libri per nasconderci dietro le loro riserve di viaggianoci e divertighiande… eccolo infatti fuori posto, appoggiato di lato a una copia della Dichiarazione di Indisteemdenza! Il gattone lo raccolse con la bocca stizzosamente, ma con delicatezza. Con un balzo talmente aggraziato da non fargli nemmeno traballare il cappello a cilindro sulla testa, depositò il volume su un tavolino basso, accanto a una lampada da lettura.

Appena @mariannewest fece il suo ingresso nella sala, calò il silenzio e gli astanti si spostarono istintivamente per lasciarle lo spazio al centro. Persino @deaconlee, che aveva appena finito di informare gli altri, con precisione militaresca, del pericolo dello Spirit Dust Bowl, si fece da parte. La Dea dei Prompt prese il libro depositato sul tavolino da @whatisnew, lo aprì al punto in cui c’era un segno, allargò l’altro braccio in un gesto amplificato dall’ampia manica del vestito e parafrasò ad alta voce il testo:

“Lo Spirit Dust Bowl non è una tempesta normale, perciò non possiamo proteggerci in modo normale. Sono gli esseri umani ad averlo creato. Ogni giorno, con la distrazione, le incombenze di una vita vissuta in modo non naturale, con ritmi forzati, in attività ripetitive che mortificano l’ingegno e la prontezza di spirito, una piccola parte dell’animo si sbriciola e diventa polvere. La stanchezza e la disumanità impigriscono la mente, che smette di inventare, di sognare e anche solo di osservare con curiosità il mondo, cercando di sviluppare un pensiero originale.”

"Tutto lavoro e niente svago rendono Jack un ragazzo noioso" commentò sommessamente @f3nix all’orecchio di @marcoriccardi, che annuì scuotendo la cresta di capelli scarlatti.

La Dea chiuse il libro di scatto e fissò i volti dei presenti. “Ma noi non siamo persone comuni, noi siamo i Vecchi Steemiani, e i nostri animi non si lasciano facilmente spegnere. Combatteremo lo Spirit Dust Bowl con la nostra fantasia, facendo ognuno ciò che sa fare meglio.”

Il silenzio scese nella biblioteca, come se tutti stessero assaporando completamente quelle parole ispiratrici. La Casa scricchiolava leggermente sotto le raffiche di vento carico di polvere grigia, che stavano cominciando ad aggredirla.

Poi, @snook emise un sommesso “Woot!” e immediatamente scoppiò un applauso liberatorio, con risate, fischi e acclamazioni.
@mariannewest si godette l’acclamazione, poi fece un cenno d’intesa al responsabile delle forze di difesa Vecchiosteemiane, @deaconlee, che prese il comando delle operazioni:

“La nostra Dea starà al centro, declamando i migliori dei nostri freewrite e fornendo nuovi prompt. @whatisnew, con la tua agilità e la tua conoscenza della biblioteca, dovrai portarle i volumi giusti dai quali lei potrà prendere spunto. Gli altri si dispongano in cerchio. Il cerchio è una forma che amplifica il nostro potere creativo, perché le energie mentali scorrono da uno all’altro e tutti si possono tenere in contatto visivo e spirituale.”

“Si spegne il cervello se è vuoto il budello!” esclamò @improv tentando di alleggerire l’atmosfera con un gioco di parole.

“Ho pensato anche a questo” rispose @deaconlee. “Vi presento una nuova entrata nella Casa: @metzli.”

Una giovane donna bruna, con una cascata di capelli ricci, si fece avanti brandendo un cucchiaio di legno come uno scettro. Era rimasta in silenzio sulla soglia da chissà quanto, ma nella concitazione nessuno se ne era reso conto.

“Ho visto che avete una cucina fornita ed efficiente! Mentre sarete impegnati nello sforzo creativo, io vi preparerò insalata di fantasia in agrodolce e bocconcini di profondità accompagnati da riso ilare. Per dissetarvi, succo di arguzia e del buon senso”.

“È buono, il buon senso” approvò @improv.

A quelle parole, l’umore generale era ormai alle stelle. @metzli fu accolta con entusiasmo, così come il suo menu.

Tutti si disposero ai loro posti. Una strana e memorabile battaglia stava per cominciare.
